Getting into the FF should matter more than an instate game for the S16.
    Agreed.

I'm sure the KU segment who partakes in the survey will beef up the numbers however.

It was tough for me to choose the Ohio State game over the Gonzaga game, but because it put us into the FF, I had to do it. Beating the number one team in the country was big, but not FF big. And a win against KU, while very nice for the guys, was probably bigger for the fanbases than the teams. Just being able to "scoreboard" them whenever they talk trash (try) has been wonderful, but in the grand scheme of things, that game just got us into the Sweet 16.

A good friend of mine, KU alumni, was bragging about the World University Games championship. I asked him how they qualified for the World Games when they didn't get out of districts? He did not have an answer.

I picked the Gonzaga game because of the relevance of the game at the time. Gonzaga was considered a Final 4 lock and we were still a nobody trying to bust through the door. While the result of making the Sweet 16 was not a huge deal, the game vaulted us into the national spotlight and put both Ron and Fred on the map. Getting to the Final 4 was a huge deal for us no doubt but I felt that the Gonzaga game was the biggest hurdle to help us get to that game.

Gonzaga. Not just because they beat the number one team in the country. But there was a period toward the end of the game where WSU reached basketball nirvana and played darn near flawlessly -- in front of the entire country -- in order to mount an unlikely comeback and beat a team that nobody gave us a chance to beat. We were down by 5 to the best team in the nation, who just deflated our spirits by going on a 12-0 tear against us. And then ... and then ... perfection. Ohio State was awesome in its own right, but this ... I mean 20+ points in something like 10 possessions against the best team in the country? Wow.

I have some family friends who have a son who attends WSU...but while they do cheer for the Shockers, the family admittedly roots for KU more as the husband/dad of the family is a KU grad. I told a 78-65 joke to a group of people, and the wife/mom of the family immediately defended the Beakers with "Hey, but at least KU won the University Games."

Now, I love this family dearly...but seriously? You're coming back with that?

I know what you are implying here, but I am going to disagree. Even though Gonzaga was the #1 AP Poll team, the Zags were the #4 1 seed, getting the same "They don't deserve it" crap that we got the following year. Also, due to Gonzaga's VERY lackluster performance against Southern (and our total domination of Pitt), there were several national pundits (namely Dick Vitale) who absolutely believed we had a shot to win.

But yeah...the run at the end of the game was amazing! It was quite a springboard to our run to the Final Four and beyond.

The KU fan base is totally infatuated with the whole WUG thing. They are making a wide variety of t-shirts and memorabilia for the occasion, which is totally hilarious when you stop to consider they are the fan base that demeans other groups for "making a t-shirt for it."

If you polled 100 general sports fans in the US and asked them who was the US participant in the WUG, and how well they did in said WUG, I'm not sure if 5% could answer either question, and probably less than 1% could answer both. Honestly, you would probably get similar results asking similar questions about the Pan-American games as well. Neither event even bumps the give-a-**** Richter scale of the typical US sports fan.

I voted for the Final Four. It was the Final freaking Four and we went to it. And we were a possession away from the final game. The legacy of that achievement will pay dividends for the program nationally for a very long time.

And didn't non-KU players start those games, too? It wasn't all KU.

Not all, but most of the key contributors were.

That said, the international game is completely different than the college game in the US. Players are much more athletic IMHO, which honestly is why I think Selden did well over there. He can physically take over an international game because he's big, fast, and strong, but there are a lot of players who can defend him more easily in D1 basketball.

If we had most of our key contributors plus Dwight Howard, we'd be pretty good.
