Not sure about the titles but the separation of duties may not be all that bad.
Demotion by promotion, I suspect.

First of all, I have no inside knowledge on these recent developments, but . . .
Sounds to me like ES has 100% bought into Bardo (either for political reasons or idealogical reasons - or both) + ES has greater ambitions than AD at some point when Bardo decides to retire. ES raised his hand wanting additional responsibilities and will pad his resume in the meantime. At some point, he will have sufficient experience and exposure to be a candidate for an even more prestigious job. ES did not come up through Athletics, but he did an ok job - would not have been my first choice, but they didn't ask me.
From my interactions with Boatright, he seems to be very poised, polished, knowledgable and ready for the next step. I hope we can keep him by expanding his duties and I also think he would make a great AD in a short period of time.

When Dr Bardo was first selected as the new President of WSU I posted a friend of mine had a brother that was a professor at Dr Bardo's previous University and I quoted him as saying "Dr Bardo will drag WSU into the 21st century if it wants to go or not". I think that is a very true statement.

Perhaps Dr Bardo recognizes that ES has become a true believer in his vision for WSU?

2. Bardo is laying plans for a successor who will work to complete his vision for WSU? Succession planning is/should be a standard/routine practice by University Presidents.
3. Bardo would consider ES as a viable successor who would commit himself to complete Bardo's vision for WSU?

I am concerned that there is a conflict of interest in the responsibilities that Eric Sexton now has. As Vice President for Student Affairs he is responsible for all students and their affairs.
As Executive Director of Athletics he is responsible for all of athletics. What is good for athletics is not always good for all students. For example it is good for basketball and baseball that parking
for athletic events forces students to park elsewhere further away or even off-campus. Student Affairs should not always bend in favor of the athletic program. It would seem to me that it would
be best to have one person advocating for the athletic department and the VP advocating for all students. If the same person is handling both then there is a good chance for a conflict of interest.
