  • Paul S Article: The Five That Started It All

Great article from Paul Suellentrop about the recruits that started it all at Wichita State. http://www.kansas.com/sports/college...e15241835.html

Who knew? Stutz committed to Kentucky and then de-committed without the press acknowledging it. What a story.

Just an awesome article, I love recruiting stories. That class got us started on our roll. So much fun to look back on that and just remember where our program came from.

Paul is awesome writer, but imo this was his best piece. I love how this article shows how far HCGM has come and how Rome was built.

Marshall: He came in on his official visit and it was very ominous weather. Spring. Tornado season. Earl Grant was picking him up at the airport and they were coming directly to my house. As they’re en route to my house, the tornado sirens start to go off and I remember pulling my car out of the garage and telling Earl, “I’m leaving the garage open, drive directly into my garage as if it’s the Bat Cave and come downstairs.” (Gabe) never knew what the hell was going on.

I'd like to see more articles like that...something on the Baker/Wessel/Cotton/Hall/Armstead class.

Great article. I would have expected to see something about Aaron Ellis. Stutz passing on UK... wow...

Stutz said no to UK after they lost to Gardiner-Webb... The quote I remember in the paper here was something to the effect of that God told him not to go to UK because of that loss, which he was in attendance for if I remember correctly

I wonder if he's just hard to reach. I found him on eurobasket playing for a team in Germany, averaging 6.4 bounds and 8.6 pts. He's still active. I'm glad you brought him up because he's easy to forget, but he was a big part of the team.

I was kinda wanting to hear about Hatch and Ellis too. Hatch especially. Turgeon recruits this goofy-looking kid with the under bite, we figure he's going to bolt, and instead he turns into the cornerstone of the team and the MVP of our NIT title run.

I loved Ellis in that title game too. 4 for 4 from the field, all of them his patented 15-footers, all of them at key moments, and every time he'd make one, ESPN would throw up a mini stat line.

Ellis was so good in the mid range. He was money.

Ellis, Hatch, Griskenas and Clemente were all in the previous recruiting class.

Basically the entire 2010-2011 frontline is exactly what this team needs. A bunch of talented junior and senior forwards. Ellis, Blair, Durley and Stutz would be just what the doctor ordered.
