  • Changes To College Basketball Style

This was talked about with the Gameday crew this past weekend, and was discussed on KGSO this morning as well. What are your thoughts? Do we need to speed up pace of play? Call the defensive play tighter? Other things?

I would be completely fine with moving the shot clock to 30 seconds. Would widening the lane to the NBA width open the middle up enough to allow for a more "free" flow of movement without having to change how defensive fouls are called?

How would widening the lane help? They rarely enforce the 3-second rule as it is.

They would have to actually enforce it. I'm not sure pushing the big guys out a little farther would make much difference though, without tightening up how defensive fouls are called. And would tighter defensive officiating hurt us with our defensive style? It is really interesting to go watch video of the early and mid 80s Shocker teams and see how much difference there is in physical contact.

Speeding the clock to 30 would be the only change I could see as an option without putting more on the refs.

BTW, I absolutely do NOT want to turn the college game into NBA style. But the college game has largely gone away from the old run n' gun styles to very physical defensive styles.

30 second clock. No restrictions on defense. If I wanted to watch NBA, I would watch NBA.

Tell the coaches to stop trying to gameplan the other teams every move and try to develop players into better offensive players.

30 second shot clock is fine, but eventually they have to call fouls appropriately to get away from the rugby scrum that we've regressed to. Everything else just treats the symptoms and ignores the problem.

I also wouldn't mind a new rule to deter flopping, which has become almost as disgusting and prevalent as the UFC fights taking place in the post every game.

I think lowering the shot clock is a must. I think 30 seconds might still be a little high. Maybe 26-28 seconds. More possessions = more points being scored. I personally like the physical defensives of NCAA basketball.

I personally would use FIBA rules as my baseline. Ditch the trapezoid, and "legal goaltending" keep everything else.

Cool link comparing all the rules in FIBA, NBA, WNBA and NCAA:

I don't think FIBA uses the trapezoid lane anymore.

When they widen the lane, they push the halo out a foot too.

Widen the lane and the back to the basket low post player is not nearly as relevant. They will become face to the basket players. 6'11 and 7 footers with those skills are a lot fewer.

                              Unless my link is old:

                              RESTRICTED AREA (“KEY”, “LANE”)
FIBA: A trapezoid 3.6 m (12') wide at the free
throw line and 6 m wide (19' 8.25") at the
                              baseline.
                              NBA, WNBA: 4.88 m (16') wide rectangle.
                              NCAA: 3.6 m (12') wide rectangle.

I would probably go with NBA/WNBA dimensions on this one, I like the idea of a wider lane - but wouldn't want to change it all the way to 6 m
