  • Most Unstoppable Plays in CBB

ESPN put a list together of the 5 most unstoppable plays in college basketball. Interesting read. WSU checks in with the ball-screen continuity against 2-3 zone.

    Wichita State's ball-screen continuity against 2-3 zone

Wichita State's ball-screen continuity begins with a two-guard front and three players on the baseline -- a post player on either block and the best shooter starting on the ball side. The ball-side post will then sprint up and screen the zone defender guarding the basketball. The off-side guard will space. As the ball comes off the ball-screen, the post player will come off and engage the center of the 2-3 zone. The shooter who started in the corner will follow the basketball and sprint to the other corner. As the guard comes off the post screen, the weak-side post will duck in, forcing the center to have to defend two players.
Everything in this action forces one player to defend two. On the reversal, the guard reads the post and reads the gap. If he sees a gap, as in the play below, he attacks the gap which creates a 2-on-1 against the forward. If the defense helps on the ball, he kicks out and Ron Baker has a wide-open 3-pointer.

    ESPN
Ball-screen continuity allows you to go side-to-side and move the defense. Most importantly, when you come off the screen, if you're aggressive on ball reversal you'll create a 2-on-1 either against the middle of the zone or the forward.

That double screen in transition that somebody posted a week or so ago is dang near unstoppable as well.

In the Iowa St Isolation play, the shooting wing in the corner even had an equally, or more open teammate to his right if needed.

This would be called bad defense with two defenders sagging at least 15 foot off their man.

It's interesting that in that gif Cotton doesn't stick around to box anyone out. Is there a strategic reason for that? Maybe 3 pointers tend to be long rebounds and he's in a better position to snag it? He also looks fairly confident early on that it's going in.

I don't like these articles. Too much awareness. Obviously opposing coaches break all these plays down and show the opposing players in the game plan, game prep, etc.....but gosh darn it.....those players can watch it over and over and over again and anticipate if they want too. Booo I say...Boooo!!!! Lol

It also looks like Fred was crashing for a rebound, so maybe Tekele was going towards halfcourt in case there was a defensive rebound so that we would have someone deep to stop a fast break.

                      1. Ron Baker has a 3-point shot off a pass put in his shot pocket, without a defender within 5 feet. Good odds.
                      2. Ron Baker is in the corner on the baseline. A long rebound and UE has an advantage on the runout. Floor balance.

And it all happens so much quicker with multiple decision points in the flow of the action.

Years ago Red Auerbach said the celtics in their heyday had eight basic sets. What made them unstoppable was the 150 options off of those eight basic sets.

A physician called into a radio show and said:

I'd be more concerned that both our big men (Kelly and Carter) get out positioned down low. Carter has Mock pretty far under the basket, so he isn't in terrible shape, but Kelly would have a hard time getting the rebound. Hell I'd say if the rebound doesn't come back towards Baker UE is almost guaranteed to get the rebound.
