  • WuDrWu, this almost sounds like the following:
"But I can drive drunk, I have for many years and I do it well. I've never been caught."

While I think there's some scintilla of truth to that statement, as there is with your texting statement, there may be some reason some people can drive drunk or text or whatever better than other people.

The problem is (and the reason for the laws are) that the average person doesn't drive very well when drunk. The average person can't text and drive. If you have a phone integrated with your car (as my g/f does) I will say that perhaps that feature lets the user off the hook a little, as you can still talk and keep your eyes on the road. But another element of this discussion also relates to the ability to multitask. If you're talking or texting while driving, you are trying to think about two things at one time (thinking about your message, communicating that message and driving). Many people's thinking and judgment (for the purpose of driving) are impaired when trying to think and verbalize (around communicating).

As for myself, I don't usually answer the phone when driving, and if I do, I try to get right off it or put it on speaker. But I never text and drive. I'm not very good at doing that.

My problem with this is that you're coming dangerously (that's a poor word to use here but anyway) close to saying that talking to my family in the car is just as problematic as driving while drunk, and my point is that one I can clearly manage while it's happening and the other I cannot. Your reaction time is slowed by alcohol. In a broad sense, yes, doing both will make you less than a perfect driver but it's not comparing apples to apples.

      • Read through this entire thread. Not good. My 2 cents......

        - Coach Marshall "National Coach of the Year" demands a lot from his players (character, grades, etc.)
        - Conner let down his future teammates and new family.
        - Conner let down his new university
        - Only 3 weeks into the program.
        - Did NOT show responsibility.
        - Did NOT show that he cared about much of anything.
        - BIG-TIME red flags now regarding his "character.

I kinda don't see how coach keeps him. Gregg is a big-time character guy. I mean...I'm sorry to say...but the young man unfortunately set a bad example and put himself in a really bad position pretty much right off the bat. Sure we forgive and hope the best for the kid and if coach still wants him in the program...I'm completely 100% fine with that. But observing Gregg all these 8 years....I just think he's the type that doesn't stand for a cancer or distraction...or "embarrassment".

Wouldn't at all be surprised we hear Coach telling him... "Conner...I'm sorry it has to come to this son. I've thought about it for a long time. I've meet with the team. I'm sorry son...we can't have you."

So the other day I was driving 90 down Kellogg jamming some Journey trying to send a text with my girlfriends head in my lap. I'm trying to send this text without spilling my beer and the whole time wife wife is in the back seat nagging me that the kid is hungry. I'm trying to feed the kid and my dog in my lap keeps taking bites of the ice cream cone. 100% pure adrenaline Hooah

Uh, I don't know how to break this to you, but if both your girlfriend's face and your dog are in your lap, you might have more problems than those described by jocoshock.

                      • Looks like ESPN is making it a clickable event - you go to the NCAAM home page on their site and the headline for it reads - "Wichita St. guard arrested on suspicion of DUI". I imagine they're thinking people will think it's either Ron or Fred and click on it to read more. However, once you click on the link the headline reads "Shockers Conner Frankamp arrested" with a subtitle of "Wichita State Redshirt Guard Arrested". Both headlines I imagine wouldn't garnish as many clicks as the initial headline. Unfortunately it also means the negative action of any player on the team is going to reflect badly on the university, which is something I'm sure the WSU administration and HCGM aren't going to be too happy about.

                        • I would guess that CF's teammates are pretty unhappy with him. Here they are, playing great, moving up in the rankings, getting ready for a big game at UNI, and he brings this very negative distraction into their mix. Could be some significant peer pressure on him to get straight and fly right.

Yep on all points you made. I saw that "headline" too (sensationalism at it's finest). How many people who read that across the country were thinking it was Fred or Ron?????? Probably most of them. Don't think Conner's "possible" future teammates were none to happy.

                            • I have a few things to say about this:

                              1) There was a huge red flag about Conner and his attitude right when he left KU.

Rumors have been flying ever since he was at North about his bad attitude and his high opinion of his play. Then Bill Self said when CF left, "We've lost obviously a very good shooter," Self said, "but we may have also gained some chemistry issues". Chemistry issues? Sounds like the players didn't get along with Conner and he was complaining about his playing time a little too much (which I hear was an issue at North as well).

The fact that Conner was BY HIMSELF at 12:30am (on a game night?!?!?) and that drunk says all I need to know about his character as a person towards his teammates.

                              2) The last time KU had a DUI issue (since everyone seems to be bringing it up) it was with "class act" Brady Morningstar (who can really blame Brady though, his father was one of the guys that scalped tickets in yet another KU scandal. Not a great role model to learn from). He was suspended for an ENTIRE SEMESTER from playing. If that's the case with HCGM and WSU (which it probably should be), Conner won't even suit up until the Fall of 2016. If that happens though, he'll probably transfer to a JUCO and play instead.

                              3) He's only 19 and this is his first public mistake. Unless there are a ton of underlying attitude issues with CF, he shouldn't be "gone" from the team. Punish him excessively. Make him run stairs for the duration of every practice for the next calendar year. This "one strike and you're out" mentality that some of you have towards 19 year olds that seemingly haven't done anything else wrong is quite astonishing. Yes, playing D-1 sports is a privilege, but that doesn't mean we need to treat these kids like convicted felons if they make one mistake. Heck, in 2 years this most likely wont even be on his record.

                              4) Why did this thread become a conversation about what is ok and what isn't behind the wheel? I could make a case that driving with anyone by yourself in the car is just as distracting sometimes as texting and driving or even driving slightly drunk.

                              5) Who knows, maybe CF is an alcoholic and 10 beers with a .186 isn't even that much for him? I'd love to see the body camera footage to see how trashed/not trashed he was. I'm sure it'll be released eventually.
