I understand hitting big on a "big" is a challenge to begin with. The volume of candidates are less than that of any other position, but I still think a more traditional approach to recruiting would bring better results. If you are going to venture out of the country, at least take a chance on a Jakob Poeltl for example. He has experience playing basketball for years and has shown to be excelling at each step along the way. Trying to develop a 7-footer with limited experience in less than 4 years has proven to be a challenge at best.
I agree with all of that and have since the first practice I watched. It's just much more diplomatic to say he needed to red shirt than he needs to punch and play somewhere else next year to free up a schollie. It was a little too early to make that pitch.

But since you guys opened the door.......

If we are going international, I suggest Eastern Europe or Canada. The JUCO talent pool this year is not good for big men and the HS players that could come in and help us still unsigned are probably in the single digits.

There is always the rent a senior program.

We cannot underestimate the loss of Evan. We certainly could has used another outside shooter. Not to mention his all out effort and winning attitude. I like the glimpses of briliance that Rashard showed. However, we may not have lost if we had a healthy Evan on the floor for 18-20 minutes.

I'd be entirely happy with a Lufile and/or Coleby any day and any year. Anything better than those two would be epic for a guard laden Missouri Valley program. I used to wonder if a legitimate big would come to Wichita St. due to being a MVC school. Now that we are back to being nationally relevant with a great coach and great guards I thought for sure we would land a legit big man sooner rather than later. Guess it is really hard to get one of those guys. I'm beginning to think Kelly might wind up having to be our starting 5 for the next couple seasons.

It's a reach to think Evan would have been the difference in that game. If Evan were more assertive offensively then maybe, but Evan has to actually shoot the ball to be a threat from the outside to draw the defense out. We failed as a team to score the last 6 minutes. I don't Evan would have been the difference.

Having said that we do need Evan back.

Hamilton doesn't play with his back to the basket right now and he's skinny. We need someone that can body up in the paint, and only Morris fits the bill right now from a build/talent perspective. Nurger will and Bush might by next year.

There are plenty of big men that aren't "projects" and also not 5 star blue chippers. There are even couple in this league. We should be able to snag a couple if we put them time in to recruit them, it just seems that most of our recruiting goes into wings and small forwards. At least that's the way it appears on the recruiting forum.

Sunrise lists prep Eric at 6'9" 218. I went back and looked at the WSU-Detroit program from 82-83....it lists senior Carr as 6'9" 225. The body is there.

If you mean a true 5, center, you are correct. Eric will most likely be a 4 who will add an inside game to his outside play. If he gets to 235 (not a reach) he could be a handful anywhere on the floor.

Cle isn't a post player, but he played a lot of post at Wichita State. I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the definitive "He's not a post."
