The tieless look has been common on corporate executives for years now -- even the suit guys, not just the techies like Steve Jobs with his black T-shirts. It looks fine to me as long as the wearer is doing what Popovich is in his picture above, namely wearing a buttondown collar.
Edit: By the way, Mr. Estonia -- Popovich is now also sporting a beard. Not sure that would work for 3G.
When you wear a spread collar shirt without a tie, it just looks like you forgot to put your tie on. Kind of like going a day without recruiting -- uh, shaving. So if Marshall is going to go tieless, he needs to have some buttondown shirts for specifically those occasions, because they look like they're meant to stand on their own. And maybe under a double-breasted blazer while he's at it.
Or he could switch to black Bobby Knight sweaters, presumably with yellow shirts underneath. That's probably what I would do in his position (and I was a suit guy for many years -- three-piece, even -- I just think sweaters are more comfortable).
