  • Wrong Ticket

Just an FYI when picking up your season Tickets at will call window. I took off work yesterday at about 10:00 am to go get my 5 season tickets. When I got to the Chuck I pulled up to the west side parking lot and parked, went in side for 10 minutes to get my tickets. After getting my tickets I returned to my car and BOOM a parking ticket on my windshield.

Are you kidding me? Good grief. I saw the officer about 50 yards away and I flagged him down and before I could say anything he says...."you can't park in this lot without a permit"! I proceeded to ask him, where do you recommend I park? I'm just here to get my tickets. Officers response....."Ummmm...you know I really don't know". After voicing my displeasure I told him how cheeky I thought it was.

Cmon WSU, you don't advertise for people to come pick up their Season Basketball Tickets and then start slapping parking tickets on vehicles while folks are just trying to get in and out. Bad PR.

After reading my parking ticket fine print....I guess I can mail it in, explain that I was a visitor and they will waive the $25 fee. GEESH

    Rant over.

Rant justified. Except for game days, the lot is never full.

Folks, who do not have a parking pemit, park in that lot all the time.

I always park there, when I attend pick-up games.

Parents of camp attendees park there.

Maybe you were the victim of a over zealous officer.

That officer may have thought he was just "following the rules", but if he had pride in his job he would have taken a little more initiative and have offered to follow up and find out the answer. Also, I can't imagine he would have got himself in trouble had he simply waived the ticket on the spot.

      Just pathetic and lazy.

A normal thing to do in this situation would be to designate about 3 or 4 15 minute ticket office parking spots.

That's a pretty outrageous thing to do and I'd be pretty tee'd. They should write it off but it's a BS hassle to deal with in the first place. With your tickets in hand, the parking nazi should have been able to throw away your ticket.

But then again, I'm just here to complain.

Whew! I thought by the title that you might have acquired my season tickets. Thank God it was only a parking ticket.

I guarantee that Sexton or Bardo would be unhappy. The fact that the officer didn't represent solidarity with the goals of the university is counter intuitive to his/her own job. I think stuff like this is embarrassing. I know that security people have heard it all... every excuse and silly story, so sometimes they err on the side of assuming the worst. I'll give them that, but if they saw the tickets and could validate that ticket pickup was happening over the next week, they should immediately change their tune and help get rid of the citation. It's not even a courtesy. It's common sense.

I would recommend contacting the athletic department. It appears to me they did not coordinate with campus police.

That's too bad. I didn't have this problem when I picked up my tickets at noon yesterday. I don't recall seeing cars parked around me with tickets on the windshields. Athletic department probably got complaints and put a stop to the errant ticket writing officer. Agree with Royal that if you got a parking ticket you should contact the athletic department.

Just ignore it. Unless something has changed, the parking tickets at WSU only have teeth if you are a student, and even then the "teeth" are pretty meek (pay it or you can't enroll the next semester). If you are just a regular citizen they mean absolutely nothing. It's not the same thing as a parking ticket from WPD for over-staying your limit on a downtown spot or some such.

Honestly, if I were you I would call the WSU PD and explain what happened. Surely they would apologize on behalf of their buffoon employee. I'm guessing that running around and putting paper tigers on the windshields of WSU boosters is not in the official MO of their department. The person that gave you the ticket is likely just a non-commissioned, part-time, student employee.

This reminds me of the true story about 5 years ago when I attended a naturalization ceremony at century 2 for a coworker who was a WSU student from Kenya. I sit through what seemed like 2 hour ceremony without seeing my coworker. Come to find out he wasn't becoming a US citizen that day due to a bogus WSU parking ticket that he was in the process of appealing. So I'm not quite sure I agree these campus tickets carry no teeth. This poor guy had to wait another 6 months to become a citizen.

I'd call the ticket office but my plan is to just mail it in and explain I was a visitor. Hopefully it gets waived. Only reason for bringing it up here was for others to be aware and be careful as to where to park. Its my understanding that season tickets not picked up by end of the day today will be mailed anyway.

Well, he was a student, so the ticket was relevant.

The WSU parking tickets carry the same context to WSU students as parking tickets on company property have for company employees. If I get a ticket from Spirit or Wesley security for not having the right hangtag, but I'm not a Spirit or Wesley employee, does the ticket matter? Keep in mind the employees at WSU PD who generally issue parking tickets are essentially akin to security employees, not commissioned LEO's. WSU has the latter on staff, but the former are the parking ticket "police."

You can call up the WSU PD and ask them how it all works, and in more or less words they'll echo what I'm saying. My premise on this issue isn't based on assumption, it is based on having a similar experience to the OP years ago.

SHOCKvalue, I would point out that if I had a public-facing business like you do, I would probably pay the ticket (or get it taken care of) because I would not want to be embarrassed or have my reputation damaged when stories about the episode started growing legs and walking around.

But if that's not an issue, I agree.

I don't have a "public-facing business," so I guess we agree it is not an issue.
