  • Rauno Nurger

With our first glimpse of the new big last night, I'm compelled to start a thread.

    Size matters:

He's 6-10.5, 240 lbs+. He's been working on his body and gaining muscle tone, but he needs to add more strength, both upper and lower body. Pretty solid over all for a freshman center.

    Europa:

He can pick-and-pop and pick-and-roll. He's got range well beyond three. He's an Estonian lady killer. Was anyone else reminded of Bart Westgeest when they watched him last night? I didn't think so.

    Coordinates:

He moves extremely well for a big guy. Footwork was good for a freshman. Hands are active and can catch a pass. I like the way he runs the floor. Will be deadly as the transition trailer with either the three or the one dribble drive and dunk.

    Indefensible:

That's how I would describe DC last night. I thought Nurger did a pretty good job of guarding him when he had the ball, yet Carter continued to score. Rauno let Carter get too deep on a few occasions, and was a little slow to rotate after hedging on the perimeter. I think he was slightly off on his positioning, but not much.

    Technicality:

Who gets a T in a scrimmage? Nurger, with his Eastern European background, has a propensity for treating the rim like some gymnastic apparatus. Love the aggression and enthusiasm, but he's got to be better on the dismount.

I read that and the first thing that popped into my mind was that @wufan: started popping adult refreshments the minute he departed CKA and hasn't stopped.

    Then I read

Into the starting lineup, I'd say.

Count me in as one of the people impressed with Nurger last night. He runs well for a big, played respectable defense for a freshman, and looks to have a nice shooting touch. I think he has tremendous upside, and is going to be really good sooner rather than later. As others have said, he needs to get stronger and put on some weight, but I don't remember a freshman big coming in that looked like that.

Yes, you can take Nurger to the bank.

I remember watching his video before we signed him and he looked to be a very high level big man. Moves really well and good touch. I look for him to be a HUGE factor in our success for many seasons to come!!! When things are flowing smoothly on the offensive side of the ball....whew....we're gonna be tough to guard!!! Who do you guard????

FVV = Breaks you down and makes assist after assist to the open man. Plus he a very good shooter.
Baker = Maker from everywhere and can take it to the hole and either score or dish to the open man
Cotton = Can shoot and score the long ball...and we've all seen what he can do when going to the rack. Who will he posterize this year???
Darius = With those long arms he will lay-up all night with very high efficiency. Plus he's got the new found 12 footer to go along with that.
Nurger = Pump fakes from 8 feet in and it's an easy step to the basket for a score. Plus he can stretch from time to time for a high percentage jumper.

Tough to guard. The upperclassmen will show the rooks how to do it. Come Feb. March...look for a well oiled machine. This team barring injuries should hover around the Top-5 all season!!!

Maybe we shouldn't be too surprised that he seems to be pretty seasoned for a freshman, he's about a month away from being 21 and he played some European ball before prep school.

Nurger is only a couple months younger than Wamukota. Meanwhile Brown and Kelly turned 19 after classes started despite a year of prep school. They are both younger (barely) than Corey Henderson.
