Details are sketchy nd there's a lot of "information" to sort through to figure out what's actually happening, but here's my take - and I've read all 23 pages (last I checked) on the Saluki board. I'm retired, so I hve time that's got to be filled with somethng.

It appears there is either "new evidence" or a "procedural error" that's turned up in Smithpeter's appeal of his violation of the Student Code of Conduct. That triggers sending the entire thing to a review board independent of the original body that ruled against him.

That left SIU with 2 issues to deal with; 1) Smithpeter's guilt and 2) His 2 year suspension from campus.

The Chancellor allowed Smithpeters back onto campus to attend classes while the review is being done. That's reasonable. Banning him from classes during the appeal would be tantamount to flunking him out if he won the appeal. That would be a little like the old witch trials. Even if you're not guilty, your punishment for being accused is fatal.

The same applies to letting him practice with the team.

The sad part is 2 teenagers probably went to a party, had too much to drink, thought they were having the best night of their lives, and discovered the big problem the next day. That's just sad for everybody involved. They probably only vaguely remember what actually happened, which makes investigations pretty difficult.
