I believe Coach Marshall's rating will be more favorable than the rating for Coaches Boeheim, Ollie, Ryan and Smart.

Errr. My mistake. Over looked the obvious.

Coach Marshall will be ranked better than Coaches Ryan and Smart.

          • I could see the top 5 being

            1) Ollie
            2) Pitino
            3) Calipari
            4) Self
            5) Marshall

However I really think that 4-8 could be a toss up between Self, Marshall, Donovan, Izzo, K. But based on some of the odd placements in this list so far, who really knows.

            • If ESPN wants to go the "recent" route, Marshall should be ahead of Self.

And see that's the issue with this list, they say it's a right now list, but then will list historical things with these coaches. The counter argument for Self over Marshall is the streak of Big 12 championships he has on top of recruiting classes and home winning streaks. And I understand that's a touchy subject on this board, and I'm not saying that Self is higher than Marshall for me, I'm simply trying to guess what the authors will go with.

                • I question a #12 ranking for Boeheim whether it's based on historical or recent success. Second all time in wins behind K, 3 national title appearances with one win, and a .748 career win percentage. What has he done recently? Oh yeah, they were in the F4 with us in 2013, and were undefeated with us for most of last season.

I'll be fascinated to see some of the ten guys they ranked ahead of him.

Pretty big mancrush over here on the 3G, but anyone remotely objective would put Self over Marshall. I don't see a rational argument otherwise. I despise the pretentious Beakers, but they have themselves a fine captain of their ship.

                    • Ollie's been a head coach for only 2 years. he won 20 games his first year and a Nat'l Championship his 2nd year. Difficult to say he's one of the top 5 coaches in college right now considering his short stint thus far. Top 5 should be Pitino, Calipari, Self, Izzo and Donovan, probably in that order.

Edit - oops, totally forgot Coach K. He's top 5, probably have to bump Donovan.

I agree that Self should be ahead of Marshall but I think Boeheim should be ahead of Self and I can't stand Boeheim. The list doesn't make any sense.

I am with you on Boehim too. I am not a fan at all.

I can’t believe I’m going to argue with SHOCKvalue where I’m the one defending WSU against his over-promotion of KU, but here goes…

The poll is heavily weighted toward recent success.
Marshall was the concensus coach of the year in 2014.
Marshall’s team was in the 2013 Final Four. Self’s was not.
Marshall has perks, but he doesn’t have the perks of a job like KU.

The further back you go, the more Self starts to gain an advantage, but it is completely reasonable for a “remotely objective” person to put Marshall over Self in this poll given the guidelines ESPN has established for its ranking method.

                            • Basically the list makes no sense (especially with what we've all said about Boeheim, which I think a lot of us aren't personal fans of, but still respect his accomplishments and accomplishments in the recent 2-3 years), which is why I went with Ollie at one. And like I said, it was my guess at what the authors will do, not what I think is right. I'm sure they'll go the route of "In 2 years, at a university with recent sanctions, he's won a national championship just 4 years after he was an NBA player. etc etc etc" ESPN is on the Ollie train hard.

Or if they're going for views and stir up comments and views, put Marshall at #1 and see the blue bloods cry a river.

Actually, kai, the authors won't "go with" anything other than the results of a poll done by 45 panelists ESPN chose. All each writeup does is comment on the poll results and try to explain how the coach of the day ended up in his particular spot. ESPN said in the Boeheim writeup that the poll is supposed to be based on "current performance," but they didn't define "current," and they didn't tell their panel how much weight to put on what in judging "current" or in analyzing "performance." So any disagreement that anyone here has is really with a group of 45 voters, not whoever wrote a given article on a given day.
