  • Ranking the Top games of the Tournament

A complete ranking of all the games played in the NCAA tournament. Take a guess at #1.

Talking about a season that starts in seven months is cool and all, but the grand finale to 2013-14 that we all just experienced was so fulfilling that I think it deserves one final look.

Mike Rutherford makes a great point about not seeing the Shockers in the second weekend of the tournament.

“No one got a worse shake from the Selection Committee than Wichita State, and if there's one huge negative to an otherwise overwhelmingly positive tournament, it's that we didn't get to see the Shockers in the second weekend.”

One could say that ‘college basketball’ was short-changed by our early exit. We had become “America’s Team” and people across the country were jumping on our bandwagon. They wanted to see us play and advance to another Final Four; 40-0 would have been a story for the ages. Looking back, the Kentucky game may actually propel us to even great heights; we showed the nation we had great talent and could complete against a team filled with NBA players.

I’ve been somewhat surprised by the positive comments (mostly from KU & K-State fans) about our season and specifically our team in general; many of them said they loved watching the Shockers play ‘team ball’ and were genuinely happy for our success. Although many of them aren’t big fans of coach Marshall (I guess they just don’t like him, ha!), they respect the job he’s done and the ‘likeable’ kids he brings to Wichita. Our players won over a lot of KU fans by the way they represented themselves during the ESPN Big Monday interview in Lawrence.

When I was in NYC with the ESU jazz band, I wore my WSU stuff out and people were like, "he's wearing a Wichita state shirt!" And the like. Too cool. Not too long ago it was Wichi-who? Ran into a WSU grad too, who was working the event.

I had KU people tell me exactly that...and these friends like WSU anyway. They were annoyed that ESPN people were trying to push them into saying something controversial and were impressed that our guys played it off cool, didn't take the bait, and instead took the high road.

Wichita State's undefeated run put them on the map and the game against Kentucky got people to read the map more than the Final Four. Strange how life is.
