  • INTERESTING PERSPECTIVE ON THE MVC TEAMS IN POST SEASON

IF Kentucky does claim the 2014 NCCA tourney title, then 3 out of 4 Valley teams playing in post season will have lost to the respective eventual tourney champion.

On top would be The Shockers giving UK one of the best games in the NCAA tourney.

Next up would ISU-B getting destroyed in the NIT first round, but the bottom had dropped out by season's end for The Trees as they lost 5 out of their last 7 games (and the 2 out of 7 wins were against Loyola and SIU). Pretty much a disappointing way to go into the NIT and it showed in how they fared.

However in the CBI, ISU-R made the semi-finals and lost on the road to the eventual champ Siena. Keep it mind that The Redbirds played the entire tourney without their 2nd leading point producer as he was suspended.

Lastly in the CIT, The MSU Bears (after leading almost the entire game) lost by a bucket to Murray State in the opening round. Murray State who eventually won the tourney finished out with double digit wins the rest of the way.

So looking at the bigger picture, 3 out of 4 of the MVC post season teams played well against the eventual tourney champs.

With WSU, ISU-R and MSU all being loaded next year, it bodes well for seeing a significant uptick for The Valley. Then you look at UNI (who return most of their team and add a couple new pieces), UE (return everyone and they've added some real nice Jucos) plus Loyola (who return almost all of their team), all 3 of those teams should be better this coming season which adds up to the MVC looking pretty darn good.

With almost all The Valley teams being loaded this past season with talented sophomores and freshman, the future of the MVC is on a serious upswing....LOVE IT! :)

With that being said, just don't expect the Shockers to blow through the Valley. IMO there will be two or three roadblocks along the way that will need to be navigated. Not to say we won't tend to business, but this next year I think that business just got a bit more difficult.

Big time addition by subtraction there.

No doubt the MVC should be much stronger next season. But what the hell do I know? I thought the Valley would be stronger this season than it was. I also thought the SEC would be much weaker than it ended up being.

So, to whoever it was that I made that approximate prediction too early in the season, I stand corrected. Man, was I ever wrong.
"Hank Iba decided he wouldn't play my team anymore. He told me that if he tried to get his team ready to play me, it would upset his team the rest of the season." Gene Johnson, WU Basketball coach, 1928-1933.

Don't forget SIU, who s started to really out things together, and will continue to build that program.

I sure hope Drake can build a solid foundation next year and continue to improve.

It's going to be interesting to see how Hinson copes without having Jackson out there to shoulder the scoring load and draw the focus of the defense. Beane will have to step up and get help from Pendleton, O'Brien and that freshman post player (Olaniyan?).
