  • Horrible article about us on ESPN

I don't know how many of you guys have espn insider, but they have an article on there about mid-majors making it to the final four and brand recognition. The article is basically about how VCU and Butler did a much better job with the coverage they received than WSU. They talk about how VCU and Butler positioned themselves for the future by adopting their mottos "the Butler way" and "Havoc". They never once mention Play Angry as our motto and essentially say we will flame out because we haven't set ourselves up the way Butler and VCU has. They even say FGCU did a better job last year than we did. I do agree that FGCU did still some of or thunder last year, but this article just seems completely worthless. It is like they didn't do their homework at all.

Everyone loves a good Cinderella story in March, and glass slippers fit best on mid-major powerhouses that prove they can play with the big boys on college basketball’s biggest stage.

It's an interesting idea, but horribly, horribly done. First off, he spends the entire article using a antiquated term, mid-major. Second, missing "Play Angry" is inexcusable when it's the point of his article. Third, I don't want to be Butler or VCU anyway. I want to be in the fast lane.

I don't quite get the point about recruiting. Our recruits for 2014-15 had mostly signed or verballed by the time the final four happened. It won't have much of an effect until the 2015-16 season. It's not really hard to understand that either. And I could say that if he wasn't aware of "Play Angry" then we probably weren't doing a good enough job of getting that out there. But seriously, it was everywhere, to the point that I'm kind of sick of it. And even if he missed it, I would expect someone writing an article to at least do a little research.

Lol I am not upset at all. More just thought it was a horribly done article. He tries to slight us for not doing something that we obviously are doing. I just thought it was interesting that such an obviously uneducated and misinformed article would be on espn.

Butler has already tanked, so I'm not sure what his point was there either. VCU has sustained some success though.

Not to mention we won the national marketing award for the #watchus campaign.
You miss 100% of the shots you don't take....

.....but, statistically speaking, you miss 99% of the shots you do take.

Judging by you quick, antagonistic need to post and defend the author on a Shocker message board, maybe it's you that needs to lighten up.

So is the timeout period starting in April or what?

Poorly written and researched and will have ZERO impact on WSU.

I follow college basketball quite closely and I can honestly say that I've never heard of "The Butler Way". Either I've just somehow missed it or it isn't really that well known.

I would bet Havoc is currently slightly ahead of Play Angry nationally with The Butler Way a distant 3rd.

I don't have insider, but just basing off of what's been posted in this thread:

                        1. Recruiting - How, exactly has VCU, relative to their Final Four three years ago, improved their position? If they got better recruits, they aren't getting anywhere close to similar or better results. To hold VCU to the same standard he holds WSU, that first recruiting class should be juniors by now and leading them to deep tourney runs. A 5 seed is nice, but they're a popular choice for a 1st-round upset. Yeah, we been there, done that.

                        2. Slogan/Branding - Are there high school teams wearing warm-up shirts that say "The Butler Way" or "Havoc"? I don't know for certain, but we have photo evidence at least one high school team is wearing "Play Angry" shirts. (See Makur Puou topic in Recruiting forum). Oh yeah, and there's that award that @Steeleshocker mentioned.

                        3. As @Shock Therapy said, where is Butler now? Oh yeah, bottom of their shiny new conference, a year after losing in the first round of the tourney. Apparently, "The Butler Way" is also the way to the cellar.

I've been thinking about getting ESPN Insider, but if that's a typical piece, I sure as heck am not going to pay for that.

Funny, because I seem to recall WSU winning the Marketing Team of the Year Award from the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators LAST SEASON.

I guess they thought WSU has done a pretty good job.

I don't have insider and can't see the article either. VCU's 2012 class has 2 top 100 players in it. Melvin Johnson is starting for them and Jordan Burgess sat out a year so he's just a Freshman. Still, Baker is better than both of them and he wasn't on anyone's top 100 list.

Whats the over/under on the number of phrases Marshall will use that become used everyday referring to Wichita State? I know "play angry" isn't new but it has been used A LOT in the last year and a half or so, now he has the "fast lane." I think he has 6-8 more in him.
