The Sanford Pentagon is trying to get a yearly big-time game played there. I'm guessing we're getting a hefty check. Wisconsin and St. John's played there this year to open the arena, Bo Ryan is friends with the family that owns it and did it as a favor to them.

From the Sioux Falls area, so I'll give you a bit of background as to why this is probably legit...
The Pentagon is a multi-million dollar facility developed in South Dakota as a bit of a metropolitan sports complex, training ground, etc. as part of one of our major healthcare system's philanthropy and sports medicine projects. The centerpiece arena is a 3200-seat arena specifically designed to host events in a more intimate feel, and will be used to host the D-II National Basketball Championships in a few years.
Wisconsin and St. John's came to Sioux Falls last year and played in the facility. Part of what started that process was Joe Krabbenhoft, a recent graduate of a Sioux Falls Public High School and Wisconsin's, father is a major player with the health system and helped ensure the contest was financially successful for the two schools, including making it an ESPN game. Here's a release on that game: http://www.sanfordpentagon.com/news_...rrer_id=844470. That game was a solid success, sold out arena and financial benefit to those two schools.
The facility, although small, is first-class in its amenities, and the Sioux Falls Sports Authority is going to continue to be aggressive in recruiting contests like this to the city, perhaps even more so when the new 13,000 seat arena opens up next fall.

Discussion of the game on another Memphis board.
They think Fred is the only player we return next year. Man, people are lazy these days.

I remember the St. John's - Wisconsin game this year, and also thought the game in South Dakota was odd at the time. Makes a little more sense though with some of the above info that has been posted.
What an awesome get though - playing what should be a very solid team at a neutral site. I'm not sure who they have coming back, but I'll take a perennial tournament team on our schedule any day. I've been saying for 3 years now that there is no reason teams like Memphis, New Mexico, VCU, Butler, SDSU, etc. shouldn't be playing us. All solid teams in non-power leagues, and the games would be beneficial for both parties involved. I'm looking forward to seeing an official release soon.
