  • Hey WSU fans. Friendly Tiger fan that comes in peace, so please don't massacre me. First, I will get it out of the way, of course I would love to see Gregg Marshall in Columbia. Who wouldn't. Now, how realistic is that? My initial reaction is not very. What I am curious about at this point, though, is it typical Marshall fashion to stay so mum for so long when his name is being bantied about? That is the one thing that has had made me curious about the possibility. I would have expected, after a day or two, a public statement indicating he's not considering the Mizzou position. Thanks for your insight.

As for the SEC, it is certainly down. It's joked about among the SEC fans I speak with. I won't get into a long dissertation about it now as I don't think it's the forum for it, but I do think with relatively new hires at a number of schools, the SEC will improve (not be the best, but improve) in time.

Many thanks and let the roast being.

    • Hey, HoopsFan -- Marshall tends not to talk much about such things, mostly because he's busy actually working. So I don't think there's any significance to his silence. Good luck to you with whoever comes your way. Hope your AD backs him more strongly than he did Haith.

Welcome to the board, Gregg Marshall has been linked to many jobs in the past 4 years. He has only made a statement once, and that was because he actually interviewed for the NC state job. So im guessing if he actually interview for the Mizzou job, then that is when he will make some sort of statement. Honestly if he had to make a statement for every time his name comes up for a job, it would get pretty repetitive and I am sure he has better to do.

          • I don't think Marshall has ever released a statement that he's turning down a job. In a year or two Marshall might say he had some discussions with Mizzou but that will be the full extent of his disclosure.

            • Thanks. I'm not sure there is a whole lot out there that excites me. Beyond your head coach of course. Many have questioned Alden, and rightfully so, though I think Alden felt burned by Haith from the beginning when the Miami allegations came to light before coaching a single game.

By the way, the initial reaction by most of the Mizzou fans had been the sentiments expressed here. The first reaction was Marshall not wanting to uproot his family. I think the longer the silence, the more fans get their hopes up and the crazier they get. I think most rational fans, though, understand it's unlikely.

Yes, I think it is pretty typical of Coach Marshall. I think his style is to stay somewhat above the fray and let his agent do the direct communication early on. Not sure if any of the previous suitors such as UNC and UCLA every got to a direct dialogue with Coach Marshall. This way he can honestly say I (personally) have not been in contact with anyone. OTOH, he rarely will come out and say anything that will squash a particular rumor. He's a pretty good poker player, he's smart and he knows exactly what he wants.

                • The only thing that makes the Missouri job slightly easier for Coach Marshall is that he wouldn't have to wait so long to get that "elusive" 6'-10" to 7'-0" athletic center he so needs to lock up a National Championship. Obviously Gregg recruits awesomely here at Wichita St. Should he not land some of the targets he's going after for a couple few more years....I could totally see him getting frustrated with that and take a chance on a Missouri (BCS) type situation. In my mind...he's one of the Top-3 coaches in all of America. And probably at some point deserves the chance to coach Top-50 athletes.

Yeah, he's really been coaching some low-level talent.....

                      • Seems like Coach Marshall thoroughly enjoyed coaching the group of young men he had this year. He has stated that on numerous occasions. I really have no idea how Coach Marshall feels about wanting to coach "top 50 athletes". He seems very happy coaching top 50 young men. I'm not sure you could find 50 athletes he would take over Fred, Ron. Tekele and Cleanthony in any case but maybe he would.

those players that are tall arent actually the ones going to Missouri...they go to the blue bloods...which is the only crop of schools Marshall is interested in...ones where basketball is the end all and be all...Wichita State basketball is the main and only attraction in Wichita, and Marshall likes it that way...filled up arena..fan support and appreciation by your AD...there is not always a price tag on LOVE and he has it here...its going to take a really good gig at the right time to make him leave..book it

                          • If MU had our level of talent they'd have a final four banner. Not multiple final four banners like little ol' WSU, but you have to start somewhere when you come from nothing. Baby steps...

                            • also IMO...sometimes personality of a coach fits the program too...some coaches know the type of recruits that come to certain programs...I think Marshall loves getting the players who are cast aways...too short...not big enough...JUCO...chip on their shoulder types...the ones who got built in anger and need the right kinda guy to get the best out of them...I couldnt really envision Marshall dealing with diva players and those who are above the team...or a "star" player...of course winning trumps all...but I believe Jans saved Marshall from a couple "cancerous" players that can be detrimental to a team...
