I agree with the rest of your post.

I still can't wrap my mind around why there is even hoopla concerning the MU opening. So Marshall turns down UCLA (blue blood) and NC State (back home), and doesn't even check the pulse of the Tennessee, Marquette, and Wake jobs, but somehow one of the most historically impotent and most fickle supported power 5 jobs is making us and everyone in the media talk? Not sure I understand.
I don't think anyone here, including myself, is worried about the hoopla. I don't know why some of the media is so hung up on Missouri. I think it has to do with the fact it is in our region. This is the first "big" regional opening this year so most of the hoopla is coming from KC and St Louis. We are just hearing about it more than we did some of the other job openings. I think most of the national media know there is nothing to see here. Just getting a lot of regional run.

That is the SEC's conference rank each of the last 12 years. Average of 4.4 out of 30+ conferences.

How would YOU define "big time basketball"?

One thing to consider, at least to my recollection, 3G has never publically made a statement whatsoever concerning an opening - any opening, ever. If he never utters a word concerning MU, it wouldn't be the first time the media was abuzz about "Marshall to..." rumors, and it was nothing more than ships passing in the night to 3G from a PR perspective.

I guess what I am saying is that during this whole MU coaching search - up until and after the point they secure someone - I would not be surprised, and perhaps anticipate, that 3G says nothing at all.

        • I love it when Marshall or his agent basically tell places like Wake Forest that it would take 25 mil over 7 years to even get him to TALK to them. Basically Marshall is saying, "I don't think so. Here this should get you off my back. You can't even afford to TALK to me."

Unfortunately some of the media takes it that he would 100% leave if offered that money no matter what. That isn't what he is saying. We get it, but they don't. They think he is all about the money when we know better. It's more about his family, job security and not having to rebuild ever again. Plus you coach where you are loved. Don't mess with happy.

Even I would jump in the middle of that one. Your fishing as I believe you understand what is being inferred. First, at a minimum, 20 conferences are not even in the discussion. So it's about where you normally rank among the rest and, in particular, your direct peers. The Big 5 or old BCS. You go back 12 years to help your cause. How about we only do the last 7 years? 5.85 average from a Big 5 conference. Then take out Florida and Kentucky which is actually the point being made.

            • This is an old philosophy to fending off suitors. If your services are in demand you never so no, you just give them an estimate that you know they can't afford. Instead if putting all the pressure on you to accept an offer that you have no interest in, it now shifts all of the pressure to the potential employer to match your offer. Also, just flat out saying no can shut some doors that you may need in the future.

Give me those numbers with Kentucky and Florida's influence removed and then feel free to question @GOSHOX1:s statement. As written you are comparing apples to oranges.

Well I would gather that when most people think of big time college basketball the sec is not what they are thinking of. When I think of it I am thinking of the acc the former big east, big 12,not the football conference sec

I used the last 12 years (2003-2014) because I had easy access to data during that timeframe.

Number of SEC teams in the Big Dance:
                          2002 – 6 (4 seeded 4 or better)
                          2001 – 6 (3 seeded 4 or better)
                          2000 – 6 (1 seeded 4 or better)
                          1999 – 6 (3 seeded 4 or better)

It could be argued that the SEC was the best conference in the country over the 4 years span immediately prior to the timeframe I selected. Still think I was trying to cherry pick a range of dates? Next time do a little research yourself before making quick accusations.

Take out KU and Texas from the Big 12 and then explain to me how the rest of that conference has been any better over the past 5, 10, 15 years than the SEC minus Kentucky and Florida.
