I completely agree, and I'm with you that leaving UNLV for USF is very strange. In my mind it's a significant step down.

They have everything going for them and recruiting to Las Vegas probably isn't too difficult.

I would agree, but I don't see Shaka leaving VCU for UNLV given who he has turned down over the last few years.

After the Shark, UNLV has had some "named" coaches, but they were all either rebounding from a bad situation or had a program on the slide down. Everyone else was an assistant coach somewhere. I don't believe you'll see a where they've hired a rising head coach from another program. This does seem rather odd, but true.

        • @AndyGlockner: A lot of people surprised about Dave Rice/USF link. Pretty easy: 5 years, $6M >> 3 years, $2.1M w/ an AD who didn't hire you.

If I'm UNLV, I pay for a big name coach.

You are in Las Vegas, you could be a big-time program.

            • Kruger did a great job here, but was not flashy enough. Rice is a former player and came in with great offensive credentials.

Really, I believe this is a play by Rice for more money. A top 10 recruiting class coming on. They didn't really tear things up this year...

Also, the Athletic Dept has a new AD, APR problems, and no money.

I think if I'm Cuonzo I take the Marquette job just to stuff it in the Vol's fans faces.

                    • Which one of the Duke assistants is "coach in waiting"?

I remember reading an SI article last year that said Coach K doesn't do the whole "coach in waiting" thing cause he doesn't plan on retiring for at least 5 years. So unless that has changed recently then I would go with none of the above (Wojo has been there longest though)

I have heard Wojo referred as that by commentators. Doesn't mean he actually is..

                            • People authoritatively rotate between saying Wojo, Collins, or Dawkins is the anointed one. Nevermind that Dawkins would have been fired 2 weeks ago if he'd missed squeaking into the tournament, Collins hasn't won **** yet, and Wojo is actively pursuing a head coach opening.

Basically nobody knows and don't believe otherwise.

If I were any of those guys, I'd be trying to build a head coaching resume outside of Coach K's umbrella to earn that position.

Two of them are doing that. Wojo probably should as well. The other two have hardly had incredible success that would make anyone think the job was theirs ... Wojo at Marquette for five years would be a great opportunity.

Hard to say you deserve to take over at Duke when you haven't had coaching success of your own.
