  • Attendance at MVC venues versus WSU

I wanted to see how many more people are going to Valley games at MVC venues when WSU is in town. Not including Loyola or Bradley, the other seven schools average 4778 per game against teams other than WSU. The average for the seven games involving WSU is 8072. That's 3294 more fans (nearly 70%) when WSU is the opponent. Total that up and it comes to 23,058.

I have no idea what other schools charge for those extra tickets, and surely there were some cheap ticket promotions in order to boost numbers. But if we try to put it in terms of dollars, using a wild (and perhaps conservative) guess of $7 for average ticket price, that's about $161,000 of additional revenue spread over seven MVC schools. Obviously not a program-changing amount of money, but I'm sure our Valley brethren aren't complaining about $20k more revenue than expected for just one game.

I should mention there is an outlier in the data. Attendance for the game at SIU was actually less than their average without WSU. Surely due to it being a low-point for SIU and before talk of WSU running the table really started to heat up.

I believe the students were gone too.

Ah, that's right, and probably the more significant factor. I may re-run the numbers sans SIU.

After eliminating SIU from the data, the numbers change to:

            WSU game average: 8602
            Non-WSU game avg: 4746
            Difference: 3856 (81% higher)

Using the same assumption of $7/ticket, that's right at $27k per school.

That's just ticket revenue. What about parking, concessions, etc.? To say nothing of traffic to bars and restaurants in the area before and after the game.

Plus the 200-1,000 Shocker Nation brings into town doesn't hurt either.

That's a hell of a difference compared to the increases either we or Creighton created last year:

                      Creighton = 16,162 total fans, 1795.78 avg
                      Wichita State = 6,663, 740.33 avg

Partly due to the fact that attendance is down in general across the conference, though.

I wonder how many of these extra attendees are fans of the home team? As a KC resident, if Florida was coming into town to play UMKC, I'd want to go catch them even though I have no interest in the 'Roos.

"We have to pass it, to find out what's in it".

A physician called into a radio show and said:

That was pre-rant. They were a much different team after that.
