Wichita may not be a state, but Kansas’ largest city is home to perhaps the best team in college basketball. The biggest story in the Sunflower State isn’t Bill Self, Andrew Wiggins, and the Jayhawks in Lawrence, but rather the magic that’s being conjured 163 miles southwest in the Air Capital Of The World. It is here where the Wichita State Shockers have taken flight, soaring to a 26-0 start on the heels of last season’s Final Four appearance, the school’s first since 1965.
Not since the days of Xavier McDaniel, Antoine Carr, and Cliff Levingston have the Shockers enjoyed this kind of stay in the national spotlight. And even then, the teams of the Gene Smithson era never reached the heights that current head coach Gregg Marshall has piloted Wichita State to.
But is anyone really surprised?
