jan 20, 1962. Memory is fading (after all, I walked two miles to school in 4 feet of snow and it was uphill in each direction) but I believe Ernie Moore had had to sit the first semester (grades) and this game against Bradley was his first back. I don't recall how far behind we were, perhaps 19 or so. WSU called a timeout fairly late in the second half after Ernie leading a ferocious comeback, the team huddles with Ralph Miller, but not Ernie. Too exhausted to return to the sideline, he sat down on the court and waited until play resumed and he continued his decimationof the Braves. Final WSU 89-88.

How much of that is fact and how much is my memory from being an impressionable 16-year-old kid, I'll leave that for you to decide.

The Braueur Game at home vs Creighton we were down by 8 with something like 45 seconds to go weren't we?

It was 03-04. It was 11-0 SIU then 43-20 SIU when Coach Turgeon started lighting into the guys during the under 4 timeout and that's when things started to get crazy. The Shocks went on an 11-4 run before Matt Clark hit a corner 3 to end the half and blow up the Arena. I promise you it's never been that loud with WSU down 13. It was incredible. But it was NOTHING compared to the 15-0 run to start the 2nd half and give WSU the lead at 49-47.

SIU was so effing tough...nobody comes back on the road from what WSU threw at them. NOBODY. That was a 29-4 run and they were in deep foul trouble, relying on freshman guards. And they won. Those were some tough minded sons of guns.

Was this the game where right at the end Randy Burns was mugged in the corner and no call was made, or maybe a jump ball and we lost the possession?

I'm not sure about the deficit being big, but he scored 46 in 65-64 win and I believe he scored an absurd number of both the first run of points and the last run of points the Shockers scored. We had lost 50-63 earlier in season at Cincy and the Ohio newspaper headline was "Yates, Thacker hold Stallworth to 7 pts." So his 46 was somewhat of a revenge statement.

After looking it up, you are right in that it wasn't a huge lead, as Cincinnati lead by 6 with 4 minutes to go. Stallworth scored the final 7, including two free throws with a bit over a minute to go. What made it epic was beating the defending national champion who was carrying a 37-game winning streak.

As someone else said, that was Indiana State. Randy Burns got mugged, and David Moss hit a last second shot to win it for the Sycamores.

I know it's already been said, but if the refs would have gotten the screw in st. Lou right.. That's my first real emotional memory of Shocker hoops. I was in 5th grade and I think i shed a few tears or was at least close to crying. I was so pumped after toure made that corner 3. Watched the whole game and that was when I realized I hates creighton.

Definitely has to be the 1981 NCAA tournament game vs. Iowa. In a rare NCAA tournament game on our true home court, the crowd was definitely the key. Not only was it deafeningly loud, it had to be one of the highest basketball IQ crowds I've ever been a part of. In the 2nd half, it was as if the crowd and players merged in a harmonic convergence. Never forget Randy Smithson falling back on his butt after he hit that free throw.

Definitely the greatest comeback between now and that game. Certainly, the most significant... Nothing else comes close...

I believe we beat them the year before as well, but would have to look it up to verify. I seem to recall reading an old SI article online that said the Shox were the only team in the country to beat them in successive years (something to that effect).

Would be interesting to see if the streak began and ended with the Shox..

Not even Wichita Coach Ralph Miller, whose team has been the only one to defeat Cincinnati in two games over a two-year period, would suggest they can be beaten.
