SI.com: What was the coolest thing that happened?
Hinson: We were at practice Friday afternoon. One of our guards drove into the paint and got his shot blocked. I said, "Son, dadgummit, get in there and shot fake." And then Marcus said, "Coach is right. Angie would have done that." The whole place erupted. I thought it was hilarious. That's when you know your kids know that you love 'em and you respect 'em and care for 'em.

Actually, there may be a method to this guy's madness.
It's an old maxim in coaching that you always praise in public and criticize in private. That may not ALWAYS be the best course of action. Private praise from the coach can be just as effective, depending on the situation: if the praise is about something very specific, then a good word from the coach in private can be even more effective than public accolades, from a motivational standpoint. Regarding criticism, if the coach doesn't seem to be getting through to the players in practice, etc., then sometimes expanding the audience through public criticism can be effective. If a player understands he is accountable to a large group, not just himself, that can be a motivational tool. I realize it gets back to the ancient "carrot vs. stick" debate, but even the most PC, eternal optimist has to admit that sometimes criticism can motivate.

Barry won. Again.
As messed up as the SIU program was, this is pretty impressive for year two. Marshall is the runaway COY, but Hinson deserves honorable mention. There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. I'm VERY impressed with Coach Hinson this year. SIU has been world's better since his little "rant," and Beane has developed into an incredible player.
Who would have ever thought SIU would be looking at a .500 record in conference this year? I think they've got a great shot of at least finishing 9-9 this year ... not sure they can pull it out @UNI, but home vs IlSU is their's to lose.
I hope this is a sign of things to come, and SIU's finally turned the corner. Hinson's impossible not to love, and the Valley needs the SIU fans to come back.Originally posted by BleacherReportFred VanVleet on Shockers' 3-Pt Shooting Confidence -- ' Honestly, I just tell these guys to let their nuts hang.'

I think the question that should be asked is this: "who's won more games and finished higher than originally thought"?“Losers Average Losers.” ― Paul Tudor Jones
