  • Who Meets the Eye Test

I first put this in the Poll Watch thread late last night and probably should have done this to bring with.

Try to do this without looking any of the teams up. I will post the teams tonight or tomorrow.

Where is the category for BCS or not?

And then I also need to see a category for how hyped each program is.

Without those two things, you can't make an objective ranking system, right?

Does team B have any Freshman lottery picks?

Sad, but true, DJ06. It is the "eye test," after all. The info above allows a blind (objective, unemotional, etc.) ranking -- not too many eyes involved in one of those.

One thing we do know is that B is not Kentucky, Kansas, or North Carolina. Not enough losses (!).

              C, E, A, D, B

Team C, game to game, holds a slight edge on E. Team C also gets credit for having the most true road games, highest road win, and the most total neutral/away games of any of the teams.

Even though team A has the best win among all teams, it was at home and not significantly better than C and E's best win. Problem with A is that their 2nd and 3rd best wins are the worst among all teams.

While Team D has played and won the most top 100 games among these 5, their best win is only the 4th/6th best win among all teams. Team C has 3 wins higher than Team D and that includes a road and neutral game. Team D has nothing to say they can beat top 50 teams.

Team B is on the bottom. Their best game (and toughest game among all games, all teams) was a loss. Their best win is at home over #50. Same problem as Team D only worse because their overall schedule is by far the worst of the 5 teams. Just how much credit can you give a loss to a top team without any top wins to go with it. If you throw out the loss and only looked at their 9 wins compared to the other 4 teams, the picture becomes very clear.

              Team C: WSU AP #11, Coaches #9, Parrish #19, Live-RPI #13

              Team E: Oregon AP #13, Coaches #11, Parrish #17, Live-RPI #7

              Team A: UConn AP #10, Coaches #10, Parrish #11, Live-RPI #14

              Team D: Ohio St AP #3, Coaches #2 (tied), Parrish #2, Live-RPI #15

              Team B: Louisville AR #6, Coaches #4, Parrish #10, Live-RPI #58

I realize you were doing a blind resume, but it does seem funny that your analysis of Louisville is basically that they haven't beaten anyone to deserve such a high ranking. I'd say when you win the national championship the year prior, you sort of get the benefit of the doubt.

In which case, you apply the same standard to all the Final Four teams. Certainly would make you put WSU over OSU if you follow that approach.

Fine with me Mad Hatter. I was just focused on the Louisville comment because it seemed so out of place to say Louisville doesn't deserve their rank because they haven't proved themselves yet.

Good point, JH4P. And in varying degrees, to all the teams that finished in the final top 10 poll or Elite 8, if it's not a blind resume. However, the highest ranked team of these 5 is Ohio St who WSU beat last year in the E8. How much should that be worth? If Ohio St has proven little this year and less than WSU, how can you have them higher than the Shockers? I also had Ohio St above Louisville as does everyone else.

My point of this exercise, was trying to understand Parrish's ranking and others who say that WSU hasn't proven enough this year when Ohio St and Louisville are totally riding on what they did last year. Well, WSU was part of that group from last year as well. It's interesting that Louisville dropped to #9 in both polls after their loss, 3 spots ahead of WSU at #12 in both. Since that time, over 4 weeks WSU has played a much better schedule, reasonably validating their ranking. However, by the 7th week poll, WSU is no longer 3 spots behind, nor have they gained ground on Louisville. WSU #11 and #9, Louisville #6 and #4. WSU has actually lost 2 more spots to Louisville while playing a much better schedule.

The "Eye Test" is not what it seems. It is not "what have you done", but "what is the name on the jersey", just like the polls.

Losses should be penalized, right along with that attrocious schedule....I'm not even sure Ill St would be proud of that schedule!

ShockTalk, the "eye test" is not normally a blind resume, but an evaluation of a team's ability by simply scouting them and watching them play.

When I first opened this thread I was surprised to see a blind resume because it is basically the opposite of an "eye test".

Fine. Care to comment on my reply and then make you're own comments as to both eye test and blind test?

Most eye tests are made by a very sample except for a very few heavily watched teams.
