    If these guys put 40 min together I don't think there is a team in the Nation they can't beat. MTXE

      Guess who led it last year?

      Louisville.

        I attribute it to three things;

        1. Coaching Adjustments;
        2. Superior Conditioning;
        3. Really Coachable Players.

            So what's causing the slow 1st half starts game after game after game? In 9 games at the end of the 1st half, down 5 games, tied once, up only 2 once (not BYU/St Louis). I'll give you only BYU and St. Louis for us having a F4 target on our back and them being higher quality opponents on the road or neutral court.

              1) The other teams come out wanting to know off a big team.
              2) We then play them close. We don't give it away. You can't win a game in the first half but you can lose it. We don't lose it.
              3) Coaching makes adjustments, players implement.
              4) 9-0

                What this doesn't track is difference between halves. I just checked the top 5 of this list against first half differential and they all are +5 to +15. We are +.9 (0 after last night). Most other teams have big second half differentials because they are blowing teams out and have big game differentials. We are otoh are a second half team. Wish we would join the other group and put together two solid second halves. Otoh it shows that our second half outbursts are impressive and attributable to the kind of factors others list.

                  I think we spend the first half trying to establish an inside presence. We methodically feed the post thereby waring down the opponent and getting cheap fouls on the opponents big guys. One issue with this is that our bigs aren't getting the ball in the basket on these opportunities.

                  In addition, we are not playing great first half defense. This, along with other team's best shot, etc. has gotten us into some silly deficits.

                    I have wondered from time to time if the new rules on fouling have not caused our team to hold back in the first halves of games. One benefit of the slow starts has been that we have not found ourselves in a lot of foul trouble.

                      the other teams come out playing 110% (tennessee will also), blow their nut and are left spent in the process.

                        However, Tennessee may be a bit deeper than most of the other teams we have played. Don't know that we can count on them wearing themselves out the first half. Even though most of us think Tennessee will be a tough out, they just may be tougher than expected.

                          If I heard it right, HCGM was concerned about it in the post-game interview with Kennedy. Said he'd tried different things, wasn't sure what to do next, but thought about asking the players for their input.

                          Maybe you can give him some comfort by emailing him and telling him not to worry his little girl panties. :tongue-new:

                              We'll remember what happened last year that gave us our first loss. We will be ready for this team.
