If you read to to the end of the article;
"The gesture received national attention when cheerleaders for Wichita State's men's basketball team flashed it on TV during the Shockers' Final Four run this past March.
Farmington's nickname is the Lady Farmers and none of the three seniors has committed to Wichita State, but as one creative Twitter user suggested, the symbol resembles the letter "F" for Farmington."
Really? I don't remember that.

I have long given up. But if think that is bad, ESU puts their pinkies in the air and says stingers up. Try explaining that your stinger is your pinkie. And then trying to explain that, no, that is not the actual size of your stinger... So degrading.People who think they know everything are a great annoyance to those of us who do. -Isaac Asimov

WSU "W" includes the thumb, "the shocker" does not.
Why am I having to explain any of this on a WSU forum? Gah...
And if you are going to throw veiled insults my way then by all means PM me and we can further discuss such at the game tonight in person.

They are two very different signs, but are very closely related by the similarities.

The WSU "W" is a modified "Shocker" symbol after they were banned from the actual hand gesture. They are different, but related. They have the same origins, that is why you have to explain it.
Now if our nickname was the bluejays, redbirds, wildcats, or bulldogs, there wouldn't be much explaining, but we're the Shockers, and you can tell when the Student body is waving the W!Livin the dream
