  • Shockers mentioned but no love

Three Farmington (Ill.) High senior girls basketball players appear to be suspended for at least two games for flashing an obscene hand gesture in their senior photo (h/t Barstool Sports). For anyone unfamiliar with the term "shocker," beware of NSFW search returns. Continue reading →

    Not sure what to think.

    If you read to to the end of the article;

"The gesture received national attention when cheerleaders for Wichita State's men's basketball team flashed it on TV during the Shockers' Final Four run this past March.

Farmington's nickname is the Lady Farmers and none of the three seniors has committed to Wichita State, but as one creative Twitter user suggested, the symbol resembles the letter "F" for Farmington."

    Really? I don't remember that.

Man, I get so burnt out trying to explain how "the shocker" and the WSU "W" hand signs are completely unrelated.

That's a difficult task because they are very much related.

I have long given up. But if think that is bad, ESU puts their pinkies in the air and says stingers up. Try explaining that your stinger is your pinkie. And then trying to explain that, no, that is not the actual size of your stinger... So degrading.

How so? Different quantity of fingers. You do understand which fingers are used for what sign, don't you?

You do realize that 4 of the 5 fingers on the hand are in the exact same position for both signs, right Richard Robert?

One time I was cheering on the Shockers with my wife and she told me that if I thought my pinkie would be allowed in that position, then I was gravely mistaken! Apparently she prefers Pistol Pete and the OSU Cowboys.

                    They are not.

WSU "W" includes the thumb, "the shocker" does not.

Why am I having to explain any of this on a WSU forum? Gah...

And if you are going to throw veiled insults my way then by all means PM me and we can further discuss such at the game tonight in person.

Perhaps PM would be better. Seeing as you just plainly restated what I said, yet still believe yourself to be on the correct side of this argument.
They are two very different signs, but are very closely related by the similarities.

The WSU "W" is a modified "Shocker" symbol after they were banned from the actual hand gesture. They are different, but related. They have the same origins, that is why you have to explain it.

Now if our nickname was the bluejays, redbirds, wildcats, or bulldogs, there wouldn't be much explaining, but we're the Shockers, and you can tell when the Student body is waving the W!

How do we expect outsiders to understand the "W" hand sign when some on this board confuse the issue with their own avatar?

I'm pretty sure the Shocker W was being used long before it became a sexual commodity, at least a known sexual commodity... unless you older guys were shocking your women in the 70's...

My Dad was a season ticket holder in the70s and he did NOT use the W. the Shocker was the first time he saw that, which later became the W.
