  • Let's compare Coach's and Barry Hinson's salaries, shall we?

    Coach makes $750,000 base salary
    Barry makes $133,918 base salary

I was pretty shocked that someone in our league got paid so little.

Hotel: I'm sorry to say but I'll bet lots of fans on SN make less than Barry.

Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.

IMO his low salary has helped him maintain his job. MSU doesn't appear to be to thrilled about paying out the going rate.

If memory serves, MSU has a bad case of feminitis. That is, there's a feminist activist there who puts public pressure on the school/AD to pay men's and women's team coaches equal salaries.

That will continue to suck the life out of their program. If they get rid of Hinson, good luck getting the type of coach they want for 134k a year.

Did they offer the same amount to their women's coach?

It's not uncommon to see low base salaries for Title IX purposes (i.e. men's and women's coaches paid the same), but with the chance for the men's coach to make significantly more in various other areas (i.e. advertising, radio and TV package, etc.)

I don't kow if that's the case at SWOMO or not.

KU had that issue for many years with Washington and Williams...not sure if they still do.

I believe Hinson makes close to $200,000 total comp, but that's obviously still way too low for them to be competitive in getting a "hot" name. One would think they will have to go 3X.

What does he really get paid? After endorsements, club memberships, cars, bonuses, clinics, etc. It is only fair to compare total compensation because there are so many ways to hide things.

The thing is the feminist activist at SWMO/MSU has some amunition that is not available elsewhere.

In the 16 seasons from 1992-93 to present SWMO/MSU women's team average attendance has been roughly 7,000 per game, which is slightly better then the men drew during that time (6,965 more or less). Throw in 2 Final Four appearances and a WNIT Championship for the Lady Bears and you might have the beginning of an argument for parity. Note I do not know the ticket pricing for men's and women's basketball tickets so I'm not sure about which program generated the most bucks for the University.

However, the success of and attendance for the Women's program has been on a steady decline over the past 7 year's (post-Jackie Stiles and Cheryl Burnett), although it is still very good and the men's attendance is well below their peaks.

MSU has a brand new arena to fill up and show case so I'm sure the pressure will be on to create some excitement in their men's program. So I expect MSU to pay up. As long as John Q. is around money should be no problem for MSU.

I believe that is why they were comparing base salaries...it is an apples to apples comparison.

When we hired Scott Thompson in the early ninties his base was $250,000.

I wonder if our former assistant AD Darlene Bailey is still at MSU. She might be the prime mover on the equal salaries. Bailey worked here for Gary Hunter.

A singularly unpleasant person, Ms. Bailey.
