Reports were that of racial slurs, and he looked pretty smug and delta bravoish. Then the shove and the wife's reaction. They were definitely egging him on. To act out tho is inexcusable. I guess he was all hot and bothered by floppergate.

There's a deadspin article that says it was the n - word. That's all I know.

ESPN is also reporting that it was a racial slur.

Here's the youtube link to the incident.

That's what's frustrating about a situation like this. Marcus was clearly in the wrong to react like he did and those things can be very costly. However, you can tell that the doughy spectator and his goofy looking wife were saying something far past the line that most of these players get thrown at them in games and the guy was obviously very smug about it. When you're 2 feet away from someone twice your size and about four thousand times your build I would think twice about getting that mouthy without expecting your eye to get dotted.

          • even with that, after the slur, smart should have let his play on the court do the talking.

edit: the game was essentially over, which could have further fueled his frustration- acting out

              • I don't get it. TTech is practically an all black team with a black coach. If he's a superfan why would he try to denigrate an opponent with a racial slur that would also be denigrating his own team? I guess if that's your mindset, you don't really get the benefit of being considered a thinker.

Is there any confirmation that he was going there, or is this just reporting by Twitter rumor?

                • Smart was wrong on so many levels. There is no excuse. But that fan was pretty stupid too if he pouring fuel on the fire from a foot away. Don't hit a grisly in the face with a T-bone steak and expect not to get bit.

                  • If what is being reported to have been said is what was said, then Smart and the fan both need to face a suspension.

I say we quit being so judgemental, quit pointing fingers and realize that both parties are grown adults. Let's put the two of them in a room together and let them work it out.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

                        • It doesn't matter what was said. He could have said the most racist thing ever. Hell -- it doesn't even matter that it was at a basketball game! You walk away.

I know the Alpha in everyone wants to say "Oh if someone called me something horribly racist or made fun of my mother or sister I'd kick their ass!" That's just stupid. First off, the odds are you wouldn't. The odds are if you are saying that you're a giant wimp and you wouldn't fight. Second, what you should do is walk away.

In real life the consequences are things like arrests, jail time, lawyer fees, fines, broken hands, broken faces, etc.
In basketball life the consequences are things like getting suspended by the NCAA.

You walk away. No. Matter. What.

I've been wondering about that possibility.

                              • And in real life you don't throw out the "N" word.

Smart should have walked away. That would have been the right and "standup" thing to do. Then again, if Smart simply walked away, there would be no consequences for the douchebag. We all know that Smart is a whiny, short-fused, flopping crybaby. But since he did retaliate, now we also get to learn just what kind of a douchebag this "fan" is. I hope he enjoys his noteriety now.
