You're speculating a lot there though..
That would be the only comment that I could excuse Smart for his behavior. Fans do say a lot of crap, but racists remarks are not something that is ever used. At least I've never heard a report anywhere of fans at a college basketball engaging in that type of behavior.

        • It appears the fan tried to say "Sorry man" right before the shove happened.

            +1

This guy isn't exactly "classy." With that said, Smart is super lucky that 1) No other Tech fans intervened and 2) his teammates were smart enough to pull him away. When you push a fan you're about 1 action away from starting another Malice in the Palace incident.

It would be completely inexcusable from a fan who would say that, but it would be equally as inexcusable to retaliate in the form of physical violence. Like I said, is a punch justifiable there? A choke grab? A complete takedown?

                • Jeff Orr name will become as commonplace as Steve Bartman was, for a while at least.

                  • If anything we've learned something important this week about Marcus Smart's future: You can get under his skin.

He's been taking flak for the flopping thing all week, and that probably fed into his actions tonight. He's rapidly showing himself as the type of player Reggie Miller or Larry Bird would have LOVED to play against.

You're right, it's about as big time in speculation as to whether the N word was used. But the kid is 19 years old. I can guarantee you that we all weren't the most rationale human beings at that age. Smart was already caught up in emotion with the imminent loss, loud arena, frustration and then if that guy said the N word, that set he kid off. Now, if the comment was your every day average put down, Smart is entirely out of line to escalate.

of course not, but that isn't what happened.

This. Nothing, absolutely nothing, that could have been said even slightly justifies rushing the crowd and shoving a fan. KC Shox, you would excuse his behavior if the N-word was used? You are out of you mind. How about we maintain expectations that human beings use even the slightest bit of self control? This wasn't a man who just lost a family member and lost his self control. It's a freakin' basketball game. No excuse whatsoever.

Still a kid in the spotlight, in the public eye, on national tv, getting free school to play basketball. You're told to ignore the crap. And at the very least, just say something back. The fact that it went physical just is not an excuse, under any circumstances. You have to be smarter than that, no pun intended. But Smart isn't. And that's been shown a lot lately, not just tonight.

And wsushox made a good point earlier. If the N word was said, the other players and I'm sure even fans around him would have reacted differently. But that wasn't the case. So I think you could throw this hypothetical out the window.

The real question really becomes why the hell wasn't Smart ejected from the game? Now, THAT'S inexcusable. Sets a HORRIBLE precedent.

                              • Unfortunately what has been cut out of the video is the continuation. Once his players pull him back, he flops to the floor writhing in pain.
