Our defensive intensity fuels our offense, so when one is not firing, the other doesn't get going either. An overall timidness with the team instead of a play angry and destroy mentality from the get go.

In the 2nd half, we see that none of our guys are in foul trouble so we start to open up the gas on defense, knowing that we have some breathing room. I think we also get more comfortable with the fouling situation, once we see how the flow is going.

After we get through the first half, our guys start getting into their groove, coupled along with our depth and the opposing team's lack of, fatigue becomes our advantage.

Result: 15-20 point win as opposed to a 40 pt win.
Fair assessment, but we will be playing DePaul, BYU/Texas, St. Louis, Tennessee and Alabama over the next month... That plan won't work against those teams... The minutes per game is going to have to move back towards last years numbers and every player will need to step and do their job with more production in fewer minutes - because they WILL be committing more fouls...

I don't necessarily think that what I said was our plan. I don't think Marshall coaches that way. I think it's something that has been planted in the back of the players minds, and somehow affects how they play.

I agree that we can't let this happen against better quality opponents.

      • This 3 bigs with a combined 18 points, 16 rebounds, 0 blocks, 2 assists today. More balance, but still could be better.

        Coleby with 5/8
        Lufile with 4/4
        Carter with 9/4

        .... so far

        edit 20 points, 17rebounds,

        Lufile ends with 6/5

You are right it is NOT our plan.

          • 54 FT attempts by both teams today. both teams with 23 fouls each. Seems like that might be the highest counts so far...

            • Talk about crappy numbers, check out the box score of the Ohio State-Marquette game. Final 52-35. This might be the ugliest game of the year, much like the infamous Georgetown Tennessee game from last year.

Box score for the Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Marquette Golden Eagles NCAAM game from November 16, 2013 on ESPN. Includes all points, rebounds and steals stats.

              • I'm going to hope that GM is intentionally having our boys be vanilla so St. Louis, DePaul, BYU, Alabama and Tennessee won't see anything but that on game film. I'm hoping he's holding the team back and will unleash them when we meet these teams.

But since I don't think that's the case, we better get used to seeing some L's in the column.

If we don't have some L's in the next 4 weeks, I will throw both of your laptops out the window...

And the new rules are supposed to increase the scoring?

                    • I was pretty happy with the 2nd half until I realized that we let them score 42.

At least 10 of those points were with the deep bench in the game. Don't get too worried.

I thought the attention and rebounding effort was much better this game from our bigs. Now, the execution wasn't always perfect but I noticed all three were going hard after the boards with both hands.
You miss 100% of the shots you don't take....

.....but, statistically speaking, you miss 99% of the shots you do take.

                        • With the meltdown some are having today it's probably best to shut Shockernet down for our first loss to avoid an internet riot lol.

This looks like fairly typical November basketball to me. It's not just the SHOX struggling at times so far this year. I have watched a lot of basketball so far this year and even some of the best teams are struggling to play well for 40 mins. It's how it is every November and more this year with the adjustment to new rules. Everything will be ok. I wont worry yet.

Always best to "learn" and still win the games. I haven't seen anything that makes me change my mind about this team. They will be just fine.
"He called me around noon and was thrilled," Brandt said. "He said he was going to be a Shocker forever." -- RIP Guy, you WILL indeed be a Shocker forever!

                          • Was hard to watch. I'm trying to decide if it was bad effort, the sloppiness, the bad shooting or just the failure to meet my lofty expectations.
Not expecting Ron and Fred to both be off their shooting game the same night too many times this year.
Kadeem with 8 rebounds. Darius with 9 points. Good. Failure of the bigs to be strong around the basket. Bad.
Still proud of Nick. The all around effort is so much better this year. Half of Canada has gotten the message.
And then there's Tekele. Shooting the three like the end of last season.

All in all, not pleased with today's game. I'm fairly confident the next string of games will have their full attention and expect better performances.
Where oh where is our T. Boone Pickens.
