Hey I watch the voice and everyone of the coaches say take the song and make it your own. After all some of the people they get to sing it consider themselves artists. I agree the best versions are the ones that are done the way it is written. I wonder what a Duck Dynasty version would sound like?

Over the years I have noticed the vast majority of those chosen to sing the Star Spangled Banner in front of large crowds tend to make the same mistake .... they spend hours practicing a huge close. The problem is they spend all the time on making sure they belt the last line out like this (with the emphasis on the last word "brave"):
O'er the land of the freeeee and the home of the braaaaaaaaaave!
They shorten "free" up so they have the pipes left for "brave" (though they often hit that cool high note). That's a mistake, because when "brave" is sung the crowd drowns the entire effort out. They should spend their time rocking "free" and then making brave short and sweet.
O'er the land of the freeeeeeeeeeee and the home of the braaave!
If you start watching you will see that even though the crowd is going nuts and no longer paying attention, they are still standing there belting out "brave" to nobody. Kinda sad, because they are probably rockin' it.Kung Wu say, man who read woman like book, prefer braille!

Remember when Nancy Pelosi said about Obamacare:
"We have to pass it, to find out what's in it".
A physician called into a radio show and said:
"That's the definition of a stool sample."

I love the song, except when it's belabored. It's not meant to be stretched out. I've never heard a slow version I liked. Sing/play it at a nice medium tempo. Don't slow it down until "Land of the free". Leave the vocal acrobatics in the theater or studio. That's the recipe for a National Anthem to get the RoyalShock seal of approval.Last edited by RoyalShock; December 8, 2013, 03:41 PM.

Makes me ashamed that KU would allow it and that JoCo is a part of the state of Kansas. KU has some work to do.

Whitney killed it when she did it 20 years ago. That was awesome. Stop trying to be Whitney. And these people need to go out there with a metronome playing over the PA system to force them to keep up. I cringe when these people sing the anthem. It is not an audition. Just sing it and get off the floor. Honor the song and the flag.
Also, Harry Conick, JR. did a really cool version at the NBA all-star game many years ago accompanied by a guitarist. That was way cool.
I have always been relieved when the barber shop guys are on the court because they are solid and keep up the pace. Plus very little chance of screwing up the lyrics when you have a group.
Oh, one last thing. I just remembered years ago when Cohen let a current player sing the anthem. Help me out fellas. I was there but I can't remember who it was. Steve Grayer maybe? Wow. Absolutely the worst. I felt sorry for everyone involved. Bad idea coach Cohen.

This war was lost around 1988. I don't mind "modern" takes on the SSB as long as singers don't try to hump it. There's no place for sexy in the National Anthem, folks“The rebellion on the populist right against the results of the 2020 election was partly a cynical, knowing effort by political operators and their hype men in the media to steal an election or at least get rich trying. But it was also the tragic consequence of the informational malnourishment so badly afflicting the nation. ... Americans gorge themselves daily on empty informational calories, indulging their sugar fixes of self-affirming half-truths and even outright lies.'”
