After hearing that the Chiefs broke the record for loudest outdoor stadium in the world, it got me thinking. Do you think it would be possible to try that at Koch arena? I would love it if we had the official title of loudest fans in the world, or wherever.

As much as I hate to say it, Allen Fieldhouse probably has the best potential for that. The arena isn't very big sizewise (probably comparable to ours) but seats about 5-6K more. The reason AFH seats 16,300 is because the fans are crammed in like sardines.
I'm not particularly impressed with AFH. I have been there twice. First one was against Colorado about ten years ago, and the crowd practically slept through the game. The other was a Big Monday game against MT's Aggies, which KU jumped out big early, so the crowd coasted for most of the game. Yes, the building goes nuts for KSU, Missouri, or other big games...but give us the same opponents in CKA, and our atmosphere would be even more epically legendary than it already is. Because it is expected that KU will win (for the most part), that wine-and-cheese crowd doesn't have the hunger that our crowd has.78-65

As far as the Guinness Book of World Records, I think there is a formal process for the Guinness people to come in and measure it. Had the KU people had Guinness in the building for that last Missouri game (I'm guessing they did not), that game would be listed.78-65

What I don't like are the staged "let's see how loud we can be" moments. That game Guinness lists is from the third quarter of a December NBA game. No way that could have been really loud unless they were trying to be loud just for the hell of it. I wouldn't give my full effort on a fake moment like that. Now...Aaron Hogg's breakaway dunk against Florida State or Jamar's three to tie in the first overtime....or Matty B's dagger against Creighton....or something like that? Hell-freaking-yes, I was contributing to an ear-splitting noise.78-65

Not disagreeing with you because you know what you experienced, but how many years ago was this game in Milwaukee when you attended? The reason I ask that is that I can believe that an NBA game had a great atmosphere years ago before the corporate influence really started in sports. Nowadays, I don't see how NBA games would give a good atmosphere unless you were in a big game or the playoffs. I went to a mid-week game in Dallas back 8 years ago, and it was pretty lame. Now, I also went to the second-ever NBA playoff game in OKC in 2010 when the Thunder blew out the eventual-champion Lakers, and the place was bonkers.78-65

The two schools need to realize that a main component of why the rivalry has been so intense is the fans. There aren’t many other situations in sports where a venue will get up to 127.3 decibels like at Allen Fieldhouse Saturday, and the fans are the reason why.
