  • Jon Rothstein spoke to Marshall today

    From a series of tweets:

Early prediction on Wichita State starting five --- Fred Van Vleet, Tekele Cotton, Ron Baker, Cleanthony Early, Kadeem Coleby....

Marshall on Fred Van Vleet "He's not a blur, but when you look at the scoreboard at the end of the game, his team is usually winning."

Marshall on Ron Baker "He's confident. He wants to make a run at the NBA."

Marshall on Evan Wessel "He may be the toughest guy on our team. He'll play some 3 and be an emergency 4 man for us."

Marshall on Tekele Cotton "He's improved. He's more aggressive offensively."

Marshall on Chadrick Lufile "He's probably be our backup 5 man."

Marshall on Kadeem Coleby "He's a combination of Carl Hall and Ehimen Orukpe. He can jump. He catches lobs."

Marshall on Cleanthony Early "He's shooting the heck out of the ball right now. He can make shots when he's guarded."

Marshall on Wichita State "I think we're a better shooting team than last year. I just hope we're as tough mentally and physically."

I'm really looking forward to seeing how Coleby works out for us. I like Marshall's assessment and if it's true, how sweet will it be to have his size and ability in the post?

I think Marshall is talking about Coleby's playing style, not necessarily his effectiveness.

Of course, that doesn't mean he won't average 10 and 8.

10, 8, and 4 (blocks) would be quite nice...

He's said stuff like this before, too. Can't remember exactly, but compared shot blocking to EO, but different and rebounding to Hall, but perhaps without the offensive relentlessness.

If he can be an average scorer that would still be a nice combo. As long as his offence is a little more like Hall and a little less like EO, we should be fine.

I hope he's got his fouling under control. Had 4 or more fouls in 15 games at ULL. In a game against Robert Morris he fouled out in 8 minutes, with five turnovers. In another game vs. ND State, he had 4 fouls and 3 TOs in 8 minutes. In yet another game, 4 fouls in 11 minutes.

Selective groupings notwithstanding, that's 13 fouls, 7 turnovers in 27 minutes, or basically, one game's worth.

Nice research. It does raise some questions, but I am sure HCGM has been working on this with him. Although, still could be an issue.

I wondered if Rothstein might have cut the end of Marshall's comment off regarding Kadeem. Could it have read. "He catches lobsters"? That would be equally as impressive and intimidating. Maybe more so.

Kadeem scored four in last year's Madness, but the articles didn't report fouls.

Sounds wonderful, but the key in there is the ending -- as tough mentally and physically. Hall and Armstead were MTXE tough; Demetric played well before he was hurt and made a contribution afterwards. I have no reason to doubt this group's toughness, especially with guys like Baker, Wessel, Cotton, and apparently Fred VV setting an example, and I suspect Coleby and Carter will bring their hard hats and lunch buckets, too. Those first four returning players are also wonderful guys for the newbies to learn from, and to carry on the Angry culture.

So the toughness outlook is promising -- but last year's team set the bar pretty high.

I say most of these guys have an Eric Wedge mentality. Like in the CWS and Winslow wouldn't come out of the game even with a broken leg his response to why not was "I was afraid Wedgie would beat the shat out of me." Now thats tough.
