  • Final Four squads all relying on new PGs

Wichita State: Malcolm Armstead to Fred Van Vleet -- Armstead, who transferred from Oregon, was a veteran leader who was physical and aggressive for Gregg Marshall’s squad. He was a strong defender. And he had no problem penetrating and willing his way to the rim when necessary or desirable. But he was also a leader in the locker room. All of those components helped the Shockers on their way to the Final Four last year. This is a team that was just a few plays away from upsetting Louisville in Atlanta. And some of the best players from that team return. Van Vleet, a former top-100 recruit, is not a new face. He will accept more responsibility, however, during his sophomore season. He might not be the scorer that Armstead was. But the Shockers could be more fluid with him running the show.
Somehow, college basketball practice will begin this week.We can credit a new NCAA rule that allows teams to start practice two weeks earlier than past seasons.

Interesting that in this and most of the articles you see about WSU these days, the writers do NOT treat WSU as the fluke outlier, or the warm fuzzy feel-good story, but as a team who (a) legitimately belonged in the Final Four last year and (b) has the talent to get back if things come together (as they have to for almost any given team to reach the big stage).

      At this level, indeed.

I like FVV's chances to succeed amongst that group if for no other reason than he has a season under his belt on this team. He's had a full year to learn 3G's system, has continued to work through the off season, and, IMHO, his supporting cast is deeper in tournament experience and skills than any of the others. And I totally agree with Watcher, Medcalf doesn't even bat an eyelash in including the Shox in the FF conversation.

          another talking point.

Wasn't FVV injured before the season even started(ankle injury I believe). So on top of being a freshman, he was also behind the curve on gelling with the team.

          Homer: WOOHOO! Four day weekend.

Before he graduates FVV will have developed X-ray vision, have spidey senses, and be able to juke your wife/girlfriend out of her undies with a simple head fake.

FVV doesn't need to head fake. He can break ankles with a simple misdirected glance of the eyes.

The smart critics are treating WSU as a program on the rise, which they are. Most of the others are in a wait and see mode. Van Vleet had a very good mentor in Armstead, and he performed well in his Freshman season. He now knows what it takes to be the best you can be, and is working hard during the offseason, to come back strong. It is my opinion that Fred will have a breakout season this coming year, he is smart, he is a baller, and he can shoot the ball. Van Vleet will end up being as important to our team, as Odum was to his.

Thanks, Kung Wu, for my biggest laugh of the day.

Don't know from whence you come up with some of these ditties, but keep the daily doses coming.

I believe our other Regionals Champ (so the 2 NCAA Final Fours and 1 NIT Championship).

Negative. If you look at the middle one that is somewhat transparent, it says "National Championship" on the bottom of it. I'm assuming the transparent part means it has yet to be accomplished, but is obviously a goal.

                            Seems reasonable.
