  • Shockers Getting after it in the Weight Room

This was posted in another thread, but I figured it deserved it's own as it talks about a lot of people besides just FVV.

Sounds like they are putting in the time in the Weight Room
The mountains are calling, and I must go.

Surprised to not see Cotton ranked as one of the 5 strongest guys on the team.

Was thinking the same thing, but I know he had that back injury last year. Could still be slowing him down.

Never in my born days have I seen a Shocker that can do the dribbling drills as well as FVV. He had to of worked hard and often in his basketball career to do that. Look for FVV to be one of our leaders this Season. What happens when he needs 10-15 minutes of rest each game? Enter Baker and Cotton in at the 1 and 2 or the 2 and 1 because it does not matter which. In the meanwhile, we will continue to pray for DJ and wish the very best for him in his road to a safe and healthy recovery. As we like to say on SN, once a Shocker, always a Shocker.

Kerry is one of the best trainers out there IMO. Claudius Johnson came in here many moons ago and trained very hard. By the time he graduated, he could bench at least 405-lbs. For those players that to want excel with hard work and get stronger and more conditioned, Kerry will show them the way.

Carter will be a huge addition to our team and it is a breath of fresh air to read of how our beloved Shockers are working hard during the off-Season which will be sure to pay dividends when the bright lights glisten and we go live. I predict Carter will have similar to slightly better stats than Carl Hall had as a Junior and that is not chopped liver. Keeping Mr. Carter off the floor will be like trying to pull hens teeth. Likewise, Mr. Coleby will man the middle for us and make us happy as larks. We seem to be the deepest at the 3 position. However, seeing a Carter, Coleby, Early sighting on the hardwood at the same time would not Shock us but rather create havoc for our foes which is always fun and frolic.

Sounds like our Canadian duo are right in there making hay too. Were they working so diligently last year at this time? Dunno, but it was great that their names were mentioned in this article concerning the here and now. Our Juco players during the Marshall Plan seem to have improved and solid Senior Seasons.

Our quality depth on paper from top to bottom makes playing time very competitive and intense to earn which is a good thing and will be ongoing from jump street through Dancing with the Stars time. Let's put it this way. The prognosicators will not be pickin us to finish no stinkin 4th in the Valley after we landed in the Final 4 last Season with far more injuries to deal with all Season then any other team in Division 1 College Basketball that Danced.

I'm really excited to see how much FVV has improved over the off season and love reading that he's already taking a leadership role. I think Malcum played a big part in mentoring Fred last year and leading by example.

What strikes me about this article is the comment from Rosenblum that this team won't be as physically imposing as last year's team but will be stronger. And that it is a "fun" team to work with. Not sure what he means by that but I'm sure that it has nothing to do with fun off the court.

We need this team to be strong as they won't be as big as last year's team but I think they still have some serious beef across all positions. Is it November yet?

This is the exact quote from Kerry:

“But this team, pound for pound, is probably going to be stronger than (recent teams) and, up and down, more athletic. This is a fun team to work with.”

                Read more here: http://www.kansas.com/2013/09/14/300...#storylink=cpy

I like it, especially the more athletic part. We will be plenty strong enough to hold our own.

Most important thing though is what level of basketball skill, IQ and chemistry this team can bring to bear.

The article mentions that only 54 players at the NBA draft combines over the last 13 years could press 20 reps of 185 lbs and that Paul Miller and Maurice Evans were two of them. KR anticipates five players hitting that mark this year. A very impressive training program and a big part of our success.

Roughly 5% of NBA prospects can bench that much.

                      Roughly 33% of Shockers can.

Wiggins is the type of player that could take us to up a notch. If he performs to his capability, we will have several monster scorers.

If Wiggins has anything resembling what he could do as a Sr, expect to see some rotations with Carter playing Center.

Front court - Carter, Early, Wiggins
Backcourt - No need to even speculate - we have plenty who could work with that group.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

Speaking of Wiggins, guys, GoShockers lists him as a guard on their version of the roster -- Wessel, too. Whether either will play that spot is up to the coaches, and possibly to matchups. But seeing them shown as guards makes it more likely that Holland still redshirts, even in the absence of Bowles.
