Where private schools suffer isn't the budget, or costs to compete in tennis or golf, but scholarship limitations and affordability for athletes to attend the school. It is less expensive for an athlete to go to a school like UNO as a walk on, than attend Creighton with a 50% athletic scholarship. Therefore, many and most private schools spend their energy on team sports, where they can compete.
Private school 1/2 schollie is $15-20K. Lot of jack to come up with.

Interesting observation. It probably isn't just "team" sports vs "individual" sports but how the NCAA rules impact those sports. Just look at track & field where Creighton does not field teams. Requires a very high number of athletes to field a competitive team but the NCAA allows very few scholarship equivalents (roughly 6 to 1 for the men and 5 to 1 for the women).

OTOH Creighton does field competitive baseball and softball teams which have the same issues as track & field although not quite to that extreme in terms of the ratio of athletes needed vs scholarships available. The same is true for men's and women's soccer. Creighton does field XC teams, golf teams and tennis teams which are "individual" sports but for which the ratio of athletes to scholarships is reasonable. 6 of Creighton's 14 sports are so-called "individual" sports and rowing is probably kind of a combo individual/team sport.

In fact, I think Wichita State and Creighton compete in pretty much the same sports except WSU participates in Track and Field (both genders) and Creighton does not and Creighton participates in Soccer (both genders) and women's rowing (which is allowed 20 scholarship equivalents vs the approximately 50 athletes on the roster).

It appears to me that the difference is not so much "team" sports vs "individual" sports but athlete to scholarship ratios dictated by the NCAA and the costs associated therewith plus some weighting to sports where the more affluent kids are likely to be participating (and perhaps excelling) which makes sense for the privates but does not necessarily account for a poor showing in the All-Sports Award.

But Creighton has that 18000 seat arena and all of the donations that are attached to every season ticket. That should cover the schollies. Or does any hope of that get destroyed by the need to have $5 ticket nights to have a prayer of filling the place up.

Go the **** away already, loser. We've reached our quota for sCUm apologists on this site. And we've definitely reached the max on UMKC butthurt lurkers.

In spite of the big arena, CU's equivalent to WSU's SASO brings in roughly similar amounts of money annually. Kind of let's you know how "invested" the community is in CU, when they bring in close to half the donation per seat as WSU.

The Missouri Valley Football Conference is a completely separate entity than the Missouri Valley Conference. Yes, they have some common members and I think even share some office space for their HQ. But, as far as something like the All Sports Trophy and other conference matters, it's a different conference.

A young Lady Shocker Softball team won their 1st ever Valley championship today with a DH sweep (7-3 and 12-3) over Illinois State who had a slight lead over the Shockers coming into this weekends series. These Ladies bring their sticks with them when they take the field.

Now we need a strong regular season finish by Shocker Baseball team and strong performances by the Shocker Track and Field teams in the upcoming Valley Championships.

We have really good shot at breaking the All-Sports average score of 2.30 that the Shockers set last year. Didn't think that would be at risk so soon. The Shocker softball team deserves a lot of credit for that. They finished 10th two years ago, 8th last year and were picked 8th this year by the league coaches.

He was certainly not a one-trick pony and part of his mission statement was to win All-Sports trophies. He believed that if you are going to field a team you should aspire to be the best you can be regardless of the sport or the gender.

The decades of the 90's was just not bad for men's basketball. It was bad for our entire program. Wichita State did not win an All-Sports award from for 15 years between 1988-89 and 2002-03. Illinois State, Missouri State and Southern Illinois dominated those years. Part of that was the legacy of our failed football program and the huge financial deficits we had to deal with and maybe just the act of dropping football hurt us. We did win the All Sports Award for the 1st two years after we dropped football before the long drought set in.

Jim Schaus joined Wichita State for the 1999-2000 season and rolled up his sleeves. Not only did he resurrect Shocker men's basketball he resurrected our entire athletic program. No doubt that Jim Schaus needs to be in the Shocker Sports Hall of Fame.
I think the act of dropping football hurt more than the revenue problems having it caused. All sports at WSU run at a deficit except basketball and in a couple of odd years baseball. During the 1980s the WSU athletic program was strong overall. Trying to bring it back on the other hand would provide a huge financial set back unless the money was raised to cover football start up and annual costs for a few years.

MG, WT, MTF, WTF, SB all need to win. That's 25. 2nd place from MT and BB would do it. Don't think baseball can do that. They could be a 3 with a MT win. I'd feel pretty confident 1.93 average finish wouldn't be touched any sooner than 35-0.

It's a pretty special time to be a Shocker fan.
Just a quick update on @1972Shocker:'s great work.....Womens Tennis, Softball, and Mens Golf all won championships to run the point total to 23 and Mens Tennis 2nd place makes it 25. After some research and updates, I now believe Bolt will sweep the outdoor trophies which if I'm right would make the total 27 giving baseball a chance to finish 1 or 2 and set a nearly unbreakable record. I don't think baseball can win 5 of 6 which is probably what they will need to do to finish 1 or 2 (#1 is probably out of reach anyway).

If you count the 2 shares, that's 7 titles out of 12 sports so far, and 3 more second place finishes.

@WuDrWu even if the Shocks accumulate 8 more points from the 3 remaining sports (Baseball and Men's & Women's Outdoor T&F) we can still set a new All-Sports record with an average finish of 2.20 beating last seasons 2.30 winning average set by the Shocks.

Taking Baseball's current position in the Valley standings (3-way tie for 3rd) would produce 4 points and if the Outdoor T&F teams can match their 2nd place Indoor finishes we will set the new record at 2.20 this year.

Baseball can improve from their current position (or make it worse) but I agree a 1st place finish in that sport (even a shared title) looks like a real long shot. Rainbolt's squads are both capable of winning outdoor titles but it won't be easy as we do have some holes here and there in our lineups that other Valley schools can take advantage of and I am a little concerned about some of the injuries we have had this year especially on the men's side.

If we can go 2-1-1 in these sports then we will hit your 29 point target and come in with a final average of 1.93 breaking the 2.00 barrier and setting a new standard that will take a very special effort to improve upon. Even coming in with a one place lower finish would put us right at the 2.00 mark which IMHO is quite an accomplishment.

Agreed, and I would add that no matter what 7 outright or shared titles (so far) is quite an accomplishment, no matter what happens going forward.
