Can't say I blame him. It's a great opportunity for Stevens, and I'm sure they don't bear any ill will there. But the timing is horrible, and Butler is instantly in trouble next year.

Stevens may be a nice fit for the NBA. First of all, he'll make an armored truck full of money per year. Second, he seems to be a very cerebral type of person. I think that style fits well in the NBA. The best NBA coaches don't openly manipulate players and try to use college style motivational tactics.

Good opportunity for Stevens. If he can stick around for 5 years, the Celtics have a chance to be a very good franchise through their draft picks that they acquired. A chance to coach in the NBA, while some like to say it's a glorified baby sitter, is really the pinnacle of basketball coaching. And any coach that gets that chance will usually take it.

Sucks for Butler. But that's the problem with making the jump from college to the NBA, as opposed to college to college coaching changes. The NBA's season lasts a month or 2 longer, depending on the franchise.

Butler fans have been noting that Stevens has never been a very good recruiter. His success is all about his player development and game prep/schemes. That doesn't guarantee NBA coaching success, but he is the kind of successful college coach that is most likely to be successful at the next level.
            +1

Sitting here in ICT, it is hard for me to believe that Coach Stevens is not a very good recruiter despite Butler fans' comments.

As a Celtics fan I'm worried. The recent track record of college coaches jumping to the league is not good. Makes me wonder if the organization feels it has a ways to go before bottoming out and has all its chips on the table for the AW sweepstakes.

They're definitely going for a top 5 pick.

molding young college atheltes is not the same as dealing with over paid ego-filled superstars...hope he knows how to motivate players who are used to being the man and pampered vs. blue collar student athletes who bust their ass for you night in and night out...

Most of the coaches that are already from the pro ranks don't have a much better record than college coaches. There is only a very few who win with any regularity. They even fire their COY.
