Coach Stevens is headed for the grave yard.

I hope Coach Marshall passes up a similar opportunity should it ever come.

I was shocked when I heard this. I don't think it's a horrible move, he gets the chance to coach one of the most historic NBA franchises of all time - and they are in major rebuilding, so there is no pressure to win right away. The celtics are going to be building as Stevens is adjusting to the game.

As to your last sentence.....Danny Ainge apparently was interested in Fred Hoiberg and other "young college coaches" so, take that for what it's worth.
The mountains are calling, and I must go.

Good hire for Boston. Coach Stevens is smart and good with the media. Sadly the latter is very important when you have to deal with Dan Shaughnessy and Bill Simmons.

Anyone check the reaction on the Butler Board?

As always when there is a move like this in the offseason, I really feel bad for the new recruits at Butler. Can you imagine how shocked they are. I get the feeling this was not in play very long -- just the right set of circumstances at the right time.

So have the realistic replies that they cannot afford him. Stephens made a $1.1m base salary last year, with total believed to be in the $1.4m range.

Brad is in a win-win situation. If he turns around the Celtics, great. If he pulls a Rick Patino'esque tenure with the Celtics, then he can always go back to the college game and he'll still be a sought after coach for some high profile program. He'll land on his feet just fine.

Just how successful have college BB coaches overall been who have taken head coaching jobs in the NBA?

                        559-900 (.383) with a 3-12 playoff record over last 22 seasons.

Was it the Big Priest that just invited Butler? That could work out poorly.

Yes. Of course they are disappointed. Most seem to be happy for Brad but hate the timing. Current assistant, Brandon Miller and Michigan assistant Lavall Jordan are the most popular picks for their new head coach. Both played at Butler.

One problem for college coaches is that often the best college coaches are successful in large part because they are good recruiters and that skill doesn't give them much in the NBA.

Butler fans have been noting that Stevens has never been a very good recruiter. His success is all about his player development and game prep/schemes. That doesn't guarantee NBA coaching success, but he is the kind of successful college coach that is most likely to be successful at the next level.
