Interesting article about Wes Welker and Twitter. Per the article:

"As an alumnus of the school, Welker is not allowed to speak to potential recruits. That also includes tweeting."

I wonder how many times a day this rule is broken?

Far too many for the NCAA to count. And that's saying something!

I wonder why people think social media is any different than any other method of contact? Because its impersonal?

That, and I doubt many of them have any idea what the rules are. They've just never had such an easy medium to make contact before facebook and twitter came along.

That's a rule that might get enforced against a celebrity, but could never even be dreamed of being enforced on a normal basis.

Sure it can - it not the person who makes contact that is enforced against, it is the School that can be held accountable.

Bruce Pearl lost his job because somebody snapped a photo of recruit at Pearl house and posted it on social media. It probably didn't help that he lied to investigators and told them the recruit hadn't been there and then the investigators found evidence on social media the showed he was lying.

There was a Tennessee case where "recruiting hostesses" were bragging about how they were able to land top recruits on social media and the NCAA started investigating.

The NCAA VP for enforcement has said the NCAA gets 7-8 tips a day from fans trolling social media sites and reporting potential violations (you know Matty P is probably submitting at least half of them each day on Marshall).

None of those examples have anything to do with alumni doing nothing more than talking to recruits on social media.

Social media will absolutely be used to catch bigger violations. But I would be shocked to ever see a school punished for random alumni contacting a recruit. There is simply no way a school could ever prevent that from happening.

There is no way for a school to prevent it from happening, other than educating their fanbase, yes. But that doesn't mean they're not held liable for that alum's actions. In almost all cases it would probably be a self reported secondary violation that they'd turn in themselves, but in the case that it's wide spread or a better known alum with actual power, the NCAA would get involved.

Some people can attest to this on the forum, but I've sent a few PM's to users about what is acceptable to say about a recruit and what isn't. It doesn't even have to be directed to them specifically, but can be directed in general on a forum such as this and it would be considered a violation.

Each AD has a compliance officer that monitors, educates, and self reports on things such as this. Korey Torgerson is the guy at WSU. I've had a few conversations over e-mail with him on what is and isn't in violation, and I try and monitor the actions on the forum as best as I can.

The only real way to prevent stuff like this is educating the boosters on what is and is not acceptable behavior.

I'd be interested to see if the NCAA has ever punished a school for anything said on a fan forum or on social media to or about a recruit. I would be very surprised if it has ever happened.

I know that according to the rules it COULD happen. But I'd be surprised if it has.

I respect the attempt to protect the program from the possibility of it happening ... but realistically there would be so many violations, and the majority would hit the most successful programs, that it could never even dream of being enforced.
