I don't know that he'd want to us to tie him up for 10 years - but at $2M a year, he might be up for it. He sure didn't take kindly to it when Winthrop tried to do it, albeit at a measly $400k:

At the time [when Marshall got a call from Elgin re: opening at Wichita State], Marshall had just turned down two life-changing offers: One, from Winthrop for 10 years at $400,000 a season. “They were going to put my name on the floor,” Marshall said, “but they weren't going to let me leave. It was iron clad. I had to stay all 10 years. It was indentured servitude. I said, ‘That's BS I've been here nine years, been to seven NCAA tournaments.'”

We're not talking about him having to stay for a full ten years to earn something. Doesn't he already have a 10 year rolling contract? I know his contract as currently written is essentially for life as it never runs out...

i think that he signed a contract extension last year for 10 years that renews every year. It gave him the security that he needed. He didn't get any raises except for his retention bonus that he receives every year. The problem with the media is that they do a bad job of researching all of the bonuses that he receives.

He also gets bonuses that are deposited into his kids' education trusts, which is considered compensation to him. Yes, the media does a pretty bad job researching all of the bonuses. His contract is relatively complex.

His contract does auto renew every year with a $100,000 increase to his base salary each year (it's not a bonus, it's a raise). ADES will obviously need to renegotiate after the end of the season to get him closer to $2M after all the bonuses.

Pay him. Pay the man his money.

I thought he was at 1.4 this year. Started at 950 and got 100k bonus for 4 years. I could be wrong.

Almost completely sure Suellentrop at the Eagle mentioned $1.5M in an article written within the past couple of weeks.

Very different situation. Winthrop wanted an iron clad contract that he couldn't get out of. A long-term contract with a buyout is another matter entirely. He can sign a 10 year contract and then just pay the buyout to get out of it -- or more accurately, whatever school/NBA team he went to would pay the buyout.

Basically a contract that increases by $100k a year and automatically rolls over every year. So whatever his basepay was at the time he signed it ... add $100k to it for every year since then. And then add nearly $400k for tournament bonuses this year.

I think he is extremely well paid -- and about to be even better paid. Get ready for your ticket prices to go up this year. It's deserved. Keep selling out that arena no matter what it costs.

I am pretty sure he gets a 100 K bonus every year for rolling over his contract. Bonus not a raise so it does not accumulate........

Articles like this continue to make me look like a doofus... where is 'Cold', when I need him? He must be coach Marshall's personal accountant.

"The coach signed a seven-year extension in 2011 that pushed his base salary to $900,000 and his total compensation to more than $1 million a year. And while it's far short of what Pitino is making at Louisville, Marshall has a chance to bolster his bank account with a number of incentives. He's already earned an additional $380,000 for making the Final Four, and can pick up another $36,000 by making the title game and $200,000 for winning the school's first national title."
