Mountain West has been baffling to me. Boise State ran into a hot team, Cal basically had a home game against the Rebels, but New Mexico? They looked like they all had spent the night at Senorita Rosies Bed and Breakfast outside of Vegas.
The MWC hasn't done to well in the NCAA Tournament. Just a quick look at the last ten seasons (04-13), they've received 29 bids and gone 14 and 27. By contrast, the MVC has received 19 bids and gone 12 and 17. The MWC has a lower winning percentage (34%) than the MVC (41%) in the NCAA Tournament. But of course they still have two teams alive, so they could improve.

"Hank Iba decided he wouldn't play my team anymore. He told me that if he tried to get his team ready to play me, it would upset his team the rest of the season." Gene Johnson, WU Basketball coach, 1928-1933.

At first glance I could blame some of that on seeding. But when a #3 loses to a #14 I feel the need to stop defending them.
Bilas nailed it - if you have guards who can keep from turning it over and break the press (good ball handlers), VCU is an average team. Just like WSU did to them. I am putting some money on Michigan to cover in Vegas. I think it is the "Smart" bet . . .
If you take the high road, you won't find much traffic there . . .

I wouldn't say winning on a last second shot made VCU look average. That's a little disrespectful to VCU as I don't think we made them look average at all. It was two good teams in a war. I love Mal, but Burke is on a different level. If someone can make the Rams look average, it might be Burke. But we didn't make them or their press look average at all. We just didn't have a melt down like most teams do with that havoc press.
A great example of previous games sometimes hving little predictive effect.
I wouldn't go that far. Michigan is the worst matchup in the tournament for VCU. Previous games tell us that Michigan is the best team at taking care of the ball and VCU thrives off turnovers. VCU is going to make this game close because they've been getting some good looks but the predictive rating systems had Michigan winning.
