You are correct. I thought about it being in New Orleans and that is what I came up with. I bet the school has that game on video. I saw it once when I was around the roundhouse. Maybe someone there can get their hands on it?

Why would KU care? Not like they are going to sell it.

I'm sure they aren't too fond of exposing themselves in such manner, Chris, given the delicate nature of their fragile egos.

You really think that game even registers? I'd be willing to bet less than 1% of KU fans under the age of 50 even know about it. 1997 Sweet 16 loss to Arizona with perhaps the best KU team in history, that stings. 2005 national championship loss to Syracuse the day after the coach announces he is leaving, that makes people sick. Danny Manning's sophomore loss in final four was a kick in the nads. 1957 triple overtime loss in the national championship game to North Carolina with Wilt on the team--now that sucks. Maybe even the Bucknell or Bradley games. But some random game in 1981 at the absolute low point in KU basketball history? Not really. A middling KU team (Only 22 wins that year I think. Only a 7 seed. Coach about to be fired.) loses in the Sweet 16. Not all that much of a disappointment compared to a lot of other games. Had Valentine not been on the team I'm not sure anyone would have really even cared at the time. KU has been to 29 NCAA tournaments since then. But in the big picture the 1981 tournament has to rate really, really low in both the positive and the negative tournaments.

Several years ago I found a KU site that listed the top 10 most memorable KU basketball games. The Battle of New Orleans was listed as one of the most painful losses in KU basketball history. This was a large site but I don't remember the name and no I won't look it up. But I can assure you I saw it and I chuckled at a moderate level.

And guess what? I found it!

in 1997, Kansas City Star journalist and KU basketball historian Blair Kerkhoff listed the game as one of the ten most memorable losses in the program’s history.

                    Dumbass.

Will another thread be created for the 33rd anniversary? The 34th, 35th, and so on and so forth? When will the madness stop?
