The announcers seemed to think so. They complimented them a few times over the air, and from what I've heard the band got a lot of compliments (especially on their rendition of the national anthem at St. Charles for the women's tournament). For a fan, a lot of it is determined just by what you can hear. It is sometimes amazing how much the sound volume of a band decreases with distance, and I'd expect fans from a team will think their band is louder just because they sit closer to them. Louder does not equal better, but you can't judge what you can't hear.

For comparison though, here are some recordings of last year's band (found on Google). There is another set of recordings somewhere.

Louder does equal better with a pep band. A bunch of clarinet and flute players hitching a free ride to the tournament doesn't do anything for the sound. Thankfully the Shox are classic big band. They were rockin'.

Don't get me wrong. Everything I've seen says that our band is loud and proud and the best of the Valley. I'm just saying that it is hard to make a fair judgement.

@ShockerFan87 has more contact with the current guys in Shocker Sound.

This year I thought Illoins State was the number two band behind or next to us
My student years in the pep band were the late 1980s, and then played off and on during the abyss years till I got my first season tickets in 2003. My freshman year in 1986, I was surprised that I made it, as it was a bit smaller in size than it is now, and very tough to get into. The playing was top notch, but since we didn't have a neutral site for the tournament, we rarely got to hear other bands. Somewhere I have a CD of 1988 or 1989 group, and I'll try and get that online this week, if I can find the disc.

Got to go to the NCAA tournament with the pep band in 1987 and 1988, and have great fuzzy memories of both trips. When going to STL with the pep band as an "elder" in the 90s, I often was asked to tell the tales of the Chicago trip in 1987. Great times.

I personally loved the Chicago story the most!

Anyone here a member of the WSU pep band back when they went into the KLEO? studio and played "Sir Duke" live? The radio station had been joking for awhile about how many times the song was played, so the band showed up "live" and played it on the radio!

The photos on the back were taken either fall 1980 or 1981. The entire marching band crammed onto the stage of the Miller concert hall to make a recording. I'm in two of the photos on the back. I was only in marching band those two years. The pictures on the front are most likely from that same time, and not from the '70s.

Yes, Schwanz still played bone in 80-81.

Yes but Gary Nickerson didnt play trumpet in 80, 81 and the band director Boyd was gone in 74 for Dave Catrone. Plus Rick Peskin was dead in in 75, I attended his funeral.
I have come here to chew bubblegum and kickass ... and I'm all out of bubblegum.

The difference in the quality of the overall musicianship was glaring. Nice job Shocker Sound. All Creighton had was a few wannabe's and one extremely loud trombone player.
