  • Today's Omaha newspaper says Creighton is going to Big East

I was looking at the CU board and somebody was saying "Recruiting is a foundation for any program and now that we have the leverage of playing in the country's second best basketball league, I can see us landing Top 100 players in the near future."

Will they actually be the second best basketball conference? I don't think so. Looking at the standings joining the Big East are 2 of the top 7 and 5 of the bottom 8 teams from the current Big East. Looking at 3 teams they don't keep. Louisville, UConn, and Syracuse. CU, Butler and Xavier are good programs, but they are not the same nationally as the three I listed. It will still be a good basketball conference, better than the MVC. It would still be a move they would be stupid NOT to take. But I don't see it being equal to the current Big East.

Conferences better than the new Big East are the ACC, MWC, B1G, SEC and XII. They could be better than the Pac. I don't follow all the trends in those and maybe some are trending down. I think at best they could be the 5th best. Maybe in a really good year they do better than that. Definitely an upgrade for CU and the A10 schools

It will help get one or two here and there but there are only 100 top 100 players a year regardless of what league your in.

Louisville, UConn, Cincinnati, Syracuse not going to quit recruiting better players than CU cause they are leaving the big east. Nor will CU get as good as recruits as Georgetown, Xavier, Butler, Marquette, Villanova because they are in same league now.

Again it will get them a few more than before but only so many to go around.

I am sure WSU would jump at a similar opportunity, but I feel like Creighton just became the Evansville of their new league. An occasional irritant for a team or two, but mostly just a perennial bottom feeder that leaves everyone else wondering "wtf did we invite these clowns for"

As much as I would love to agree, I cannot. I have a feeling CU will do just fine and honestly hope they do, because I hope we can continue to play them in non-conference matchups and that it is a help more than a hindrance to our resume.

CU has the fan base and resources to continue to do very well, and will get to play competition that will actually prepare them for the NCAA tournament. Sucks we don't have such an opportunity just yet, but I am positive that our situation will be moving in the right direction too soon enough.

How good of a recruiter is McDermott, though?

I mean, he didn't even recruit his own kid, who happens to be an All American, while he was at Iowa State.

Just thinking out loud here, but do you think it could have anything to do with him seeing the writing on the wall that he'd either A) be fired from ISU or B) would run to greener pastures before Doug would begin his playing career or during? Maybe he knew it would be easier to be released from commitment to UNI than ISU? I don't know, just conjuring up some thoughts....

The new Big East will essentially become the old A10 of a few years ago. Conference ratings in the 5-7 range. The loss of Syracuse, Connecticut and Louisville will have a far greater negative effect that the positive effect of adding Creighton, Xavier and Butler. It will be a small step up from the current MVC but the Big East of our fathers is dead and buried.

I think CU will do great in the BEast - if they take Elgin and the MVC's Director of Officials with them to run the new league. If CU is forced to play an East Coast style of play, they're going to need some recruiting area other than Iowa.

SoW better go pro this year. His status is likely to trend down if he's forced to play a steady diet of teams with decent and athletic PF's.

                          A) CU is making right decision

                          B) CU will not be a bottom feeder

                          C) CU will not suddenly get 5 stars. There are 25 of those a year. They will get a few more 4 stars from time to time. My guess is they will have a boost in the 250-100 range. It's not like they suddenly leap frogged other teams that recruit theses kids in status.
