I was travelling on business in Mid December and sat near Phelps on a flight from Chicago to Washington DC. I let him know I was a WSU fan and we spoke for a while walking to the baggage claim. He's a decent guy but I never thought much of him as a coach. I was a little surprised to hear he was happy to get rid of Rayvonte Rice. Rice wasn't a team player in his mind.
Shocker fan for life after witnessing my first game in person, the 80-74 win over the #12 Creighton Bluejays at the Kansas Coliseum.

Funny since having Rice would've probably helped him keep his job.

I'll bet that Jans was making is much or more money as the Associate Head Coach for the Shockers than Phelps did as the Head Coach at Drake. He's from Iowa so maybe he'd be interested in the Drake job. But I don't think so.

Lets not get carried away. I'm sure the Drake job would pay him more than he's making here. I don't know what the assistants make, Jans is probably a little over six figures. I think MSU has the lowest HC salary and it's probably a little higher than what Jans makes.

I don't know if Drake is able to do so or not but if they need to invest more in a coach and the basketball program in general. If they don't they will be hunting a new coach every 3-5 years. They get an up and comer and he will be gone shortly for greener pastures. I don't know how many Barry Hinsons there are out there, maybe they can get lucky and find one.

Jans has gotten a couple of raises while he's been here. Marshall has made sure he has. As Associate Head Coach, I would be surprised if he doesn't make close to $200,000 per year. Drake may be a little higher than that, maybe $300,000 per year would be my guess.

                    1.5x is a "little" higher?

I just read that Phelps makes $275,000. So you are talking $17,000 a month vs. $23,000, not 1.5x. Plus he gets to ride commercial, do all PR, share lack of facilities with the womens teams, fewer asst. coaches, help with fund raising, more responsibility, he gets a new boss, etc. Maybe Jans would want that at Drake. I don't think that it's sure deal.

The biggest reason for Jans not to take the Drake job is that he can probably get a better HC job than Drake.

Isn't there an unwritten rule you don't defect to a conference rival anyway? I don't expect a kid like Ford to get that but I suspect Jans would.

I think that rule is more for the same position, not necessarily for a promotion.

You mean you looked at Phelps with total jealousy, just hoping that he would get an offer good enough to leave so your team would not have to deal with him any more?
