Very strange move by a program with little funds to invest in basketball. How the hell do you expect to have great results in the Valley if you are only paying a couple hundred thousand a year? I mean, how many Keno Davises do they think they are going to find? Perhaps Phelps wasn't getting along with the brass. The great Tom Davis had a very similar record to Phelps.

You have to wonder what they expect... unless they have some donors with boat loads of money how is anyone going to do better?

I liked Phelps (for the money). I thought he was doing a decent job.

Every Drake fan I talked to in St. Louis hated Phelps. There was probably a lot of pressure from their fan base to get rid of him.

There has to be more behind the scenes. They were lucky to have a guy who could recruit to Drake.

Good recruiter, terrible game coach and suffered from a lot of annual defections (usually involving their top talent).

Will be interesting to see if they pony up or go the MSU blue light special route.

Not shocked .. but surprised. I agree, something maybe closed doors the public doesnt know about Phelps and his relationship w/the university higher ups & fan base. But for the money, what else are they looking for?? I thought he did a helluva job recruiting to Drake (How the hell do you recruit to Drake??) & was a below average X's & O's guy.

I've been beating the fire Phelps drum for a long time, and especially hard this year. His pay was nowhere near as low as MSU. His x's & o's were always terrible. He was able to recruit talent, buy most talent regressed under Phelps or flat out left the program. There were clear signs, from day 1, that he would never be able to git er done. After a five year training session, the administration listened to the dwindling fan base and decided to aim higher.

I predict attendance for the first game back to be a full 1k more than the last game of the year, based on this news.

Oh, and I'm jealous of you guys and Marshall. Care to send an assistant or way?

Good luck in the dance Shocks, I'll be cheering for you guys.

I thought he was a decent coach and I always thought that Drake had a shot at winning. Too bad it didn't work out and sort of unexpected from my point of view. I don't see them hiring better but there's always a fish out there somewhere.

Drake should be a better job than the UMKC job who supposedly has a Louisville asst. coach interested. Kareem Richardson was an asst. coach at Drake, and Indiana State prior to Louisville. He would be a decent candidate if interested. He is supposedly a good recruiter too.

I expect Chris Jan to be at least mentioned for this job.

Jans would be a great head coach.
