  • Is Wichita State the Texas Longhorns of the MVC....

.....in terms of athletics? And I don't mean that as a compliment.

    Anyone get what I'm saying?

I guess I missed where Texas won their conference last year and finished second during their "rebuilding year". We've been very close to the all sports trophy the past two years. No we are not the Texas Longhorns of the MVC.

Two NCAA trips in the last 24 years despite fan support and on campus facilities second to none.

A baseball program with coaches salaries out the Wazoo and national level facilities and we cant even win our crappy league. Oh and who lost to a directional school from Arkansas today.

Relatively speaking to the rest of the league, a hefty athletic budget with some serious fat cat donors.

I beg to differ. Yes I am pissed about losing today and especially Wednesday but it is damn frustrating as a lifetime fan having our hearts shattered by piss ant schools who are barely solvent.

Have you been to other MVC schools facilities? Have you seen their budgets? Have you looked at what some of their coaches make?
I have and the disparity is huge.

You may have a point. Texas underachieves far more often than they overachieve. WSU typically overachieves when it doesn't matter and underachieves when it really counts.

If you look at preseason projections then the team overachieved this year. Baseball is a problem now but I think we're on the right course in basketball. The comparison doesn't seem right this year because Texas is terrible.

Here are how we compare in the standings in some sports

BASEBALL WSU 3rd/8 TX 4th/9 (about the same)
MBB WSU 2/10 TX 8/10 (ADV WSU)
M Tennis WSU 3/6 TX 6/6 (ADV WSU)
Softball WSU 3/10 TX 2/7 (about the same)
WBB WSU 1/10 TX 9/10 (ADV WSU)
W Ten WSU 7/10 TX 7/8 (about the same)
W VB WSU 3/10 TX 1/9 (ADV TX, however in the post season WSU and TX did the best from each others conference)

It seems to be that WSU is overall getting better conference results than TX.

Me too. I haven't even watched today's game because it is meaningless after the embarassment Wednesday night. That was the title game and we pissed it down our legs. Today just made it a two game losing streak.

This is not your father's MVC. We should be able to hang with 8 of the teams with 1 hand tied behind our backs.

I know. Everyone is being so negative right now that I feel like I have to balance it out by putting on some huge rose-colored glasses.

I get where you're coming from, and it's not a ridiculous comp, but UT is WAY more of an underperformer recently than WSU. They have an endowment greater than everyone else in the conference COMBINED (close to $20B, Kansas is next closest at $1.5B or so).

The fact that they pay both their football and basketball coaches top 5 D1 salaries and are basically irrelevant recently in those postseasons is a punchline and an embarrassment.

I don't have an opinion on WSU baseball, but Marshall has the program moving in the right direction. He knows he's not getting paid what he is for NIT appearances. I'm fine with where it is right now*.

Sir, you will be in big trouble with Cold once he puts his eye balls on your comments. As we all know according to him this one of the elite programs in the history of the NCAA and confusing things with facts really screws up his theory.

The Texas baseball coach makes over a million dollars a year (twice as much as Gene), which also puts Garrido in the top 5 of Division 1 baseball coaches to go along with their top 5 paid football and basketball coaches.

WSU is still having to pay for a program that was left in distepair for the better part of 20 years. We invest to stay competitive nationally, where many other mvc teams do not. It takes time to rebuild and maintain. I would say its been too soon to guage our results based on when we really started to spend, but it appears so far that we are having great early returns.

Give me 10 more years on this track, and I would say we will win 7 of the next 10 conference titles if the current regime stays in place.
