Give me refs who's brains and air control in their lungs which deposit air in a whistle reasonably sync up with the real action on the floor. Give me refs who's" I'm God" complex accompanies their deposited waste during their pre-game dump. My fear is those qualified individuals don't have an interest in becoming basketball officials.

Don't the officials stipulate their own schedules? Can they determine how big of a load they receive? Any help from the resident officials?

Higgins is overrated. It is all about him. He likes to be a part of the show instead being invisible.

Higgins is doing the ISUb v SWOMO game right now. Seems like every time I turn on the TV, he's doing the game.

I have read things like this on this board for years. I know I am new as far as posting but I have been reading for some time. He is not where he is at because he sucks, he has earned it and not because he has been at it for awhile it is because of performance. You can trust him to call it the way it is...ya he will make a mistake here and there but overall it will be a quality called game when he is on the floor. As far as him and Marshall they are similiar so they will clash. Call it arrogance or whatever you want but they both are 110% confident in their abilities. They may not be all warm and fuzzy with each other but Higgins isnt going to take that out on a player. Am I biased...maybe a little but I will yell at the TV on some of his calls.

When refs become the topic on a fan message board (and this isnt' the only one), they are doing something wrong. He must be trying too hard to be noticed.

                      Good work.

Very few topics on this fine forum have been as entertaining to read as this one.

Keep it up guys. I am always in need of a good laugh each night after working a game.

                        Fever,

No, they do not determine where and which league they work. This is strictly up to the Supervisor of Officials for each respective league.

Now, the top Tier I Officials do coordinate with the supervisors on which days they can work.
I can assure you, they work with guys like Higgins to get him on their docket as much as they possibly can.

How much each official works is predicated by the website. In other words, we open dates on the calendar indicating we are available and ready to officiate each date.

If we are unavailable, we simply close the date.
Above all, make the right call.

I believe that in the past, most Valley road trips were on Saturday and Monday or Thursday and Saturday games to save on travel costs and number of school classes missed. Because most conferences did this, the Valley went to more Wednesday games plus raised the pay to get the best officials on contracts. Therefore, the importance of jet travel to allow our kids to miss less school days. Somebody else may be able to correct me if I'm wrong.

The Valley has mixed up when games are played both to get better officials and to increase their chances of finding themselves on TV. That's why we now see Tuesday/Wednesday and Saturday/Sunday schedules.

I figured this was the case. I couldn't remember the Tuesday games before this season. I do remember the occasional Sunday for TV though. But it wasn't 2 or 3 games on a Sunday either.

                                Home foul margin

Of the 198 referees who have worked 10 or more games this season, exactly 6 have called mor fouls on home teams than opponents. The average is is -2.40 per game -- 2.4 more fouls on opponents than home teams.

For the Missouri Valley teams only, five of the ten teams have averaged more fouls on the home teams than the visiting teams; five had more fouls on the visitors. The per game average over all games is 0.14 more fouls called on the visitors than on the home team. Of course, 160 of the 277 games included in this total have two MVC teams playing each other, so by definition, those games have an average of 0.00. Removing those would not have much of an effect of the -0.14 overall average.
