Originally posted by Rocky Mountain Shock View PostThen why the hell are programs like Nebraska, DePaul, Texas Tech, Ole Miss, Auburn, etc, considered "major"? Conference affiliation only, that's why, because they certainly don't have the results that you speak of. This is why conference affiliation SHOULD NOT be the determining factor of what makes a team "mid-major."
I'm OK with basing the term "blue bloods" on results. But let's not for a minute start thinking DePaul is a major program because every year they win a lot of games and go to the tournament, because, well, they don't. If we're "mid-major" because of our lack of results, then so are a whole bunch of BCS programs.
What we consider ourselves is of no concern to others, unless it is others you are trying to convince and that won't happen without results. Sorry, it is what it is. We get the label "Major" and the actions of a "Major" confused. I could care less about the label. What burns my fire is to be a "Major Player", I don't care about the label. If we're a "Major Player", others can call us whatever they want and I'll laugh all day long because I'm confident in who we are.

You can plead all you want. We are not going to "embrace" the mid-major label. You need to become educated on the issue.
1) We pay our coach a major salary (1.6M)
2) We recruit and sign major players
3) We have major facilities
4) We have major attendance
5) We have a major athletic budget (chartered flights, private jets, etc.)
You are alone on this issue now go away and spam Evansville's message board. They will be glad to embrace the term with you.

Yes, the guy who doesn't follow much WSU basketball calls us a mid-major. Cue up WSU fans who like to rage about what people categorize the program in. Rinse, repeat.
Maybe if you guys didn't jump down people's throats for calling us midmajor, and just ignored it and didn't comment on it, there wouldn't be 20 posts talking about why we're not midmajor, which in fact looks midmajor.
It's like trolling. If you feed the troll, they thrive.

Now it doesn't. A major program is loosely defined by its major attributes - conference affiliation being a major one. 75% of the major programs in the NCAA have done no more than we have in the tournament. This idea that we have to do exactly what Gonzaga does is someone's late-night pet theory.
Someone at some time arbitrarily claimed that for a non-BCS school to be considered a major program, they needed to pass some artificial bar of on court excellence. That is a double standard. 75% of the BCS schools haven't done squat in the NCAA tournament over the last 20 years. The overall operation of a basketball school is the best indicator of major or mid-major status. It just so happens that 99.9995% of all non-BCS schools are mid-majors for one simple reason - $$$. We are the exception to that rule.
NIU can go to a Sweet 16 every other year and they will still be a mid-major at the end of the day.
We can not go for another decade and we will still be a major program.

I'll guarantee you, if UNI goes to the S16 every other year, they will not be consider a mid-major. Book it! Not only that, but the notoriety they'll recieve, the future players they'll get, will all take care of the money issue.
On the other hand, if we continue for the next decade without another Dance card, we will be nothing more than a DePaul, maybe worse. We will probably be considered the biggest spending want-to-be in DI basketball.
So you just go ahead and feel good about that "Major" label on your chest because of the money that's spent. I'll take solace in actually success.

Non-BCS programs have a pedestal they have to reach in order to not be labeled mid-major--that is they have to produce "results". But BCS programs do not have to reach that pedestal. It's a double standard. That's my gripe, and it's not with you, it's with this ridiculous way to categorize teams that marginalizes some and elevates others without any sense of fairness or sanity."It's amazing to watch Ron slide into that open area, Fred will find him and it's straight cash homie."--HCGM

People have been huge jerks on this site for years. Thanks for the article baller1, I enjoyed it. Sometimes you have to read from websites that do label us as a "mid-major." But frankly, I don't really care what other people call us. We play team basketball. We play lockdown team defense. "Majors" do not do that the way it gets done in the valley. That is why many "Major" schools have lost to "Mid Major" valley programs over and over in non con and in the tourney. Its a matter of styles, I do not want us to start playing, "Big 12 10 whatever" styled basketball. Lazy on defense just try to steal and dunk. No organization no team unity. Just 5 future NBA players, playing for themselves. If it gets us qualified as a mid major, to not play that style of basketball, and have lower scoring games (which lowers RPI) *not sure why we never talk about this. How about the fact that yes, valley schools do score less per game, but we also play hardcore defense in this league.*
But shockernet has really become synonymous with people, being jerks for a lot of people. I let my opinions fly on here years ago, and people took a dump all over them. There is a whole host of people who come to Shocker games and sit in their seats and make judgements about everything. Then they go sit on a computer and think they rule the world because they can out argue you with a keyboard. They think that people really care what they think. Because their is a bakers dozen of people on a website that read and agree with them.
I know exactly what will happen, I post this, People will Rip on Rip form years ago and drop whatever kind of insult they can. The way they drop the "Spammer" bomb over and over in such an immature way on you Baller1. But thankfully, my peace and happiness and content-ness does not come from what a bunch of middle aged pricks from wichita think about me on a message board.
Thanks for the great article.

the poster made it clear that they had produced something about the Shox and wanted to share it. It wasn't disingenuous at all. And look at the response he got? People were appreciative and thankful. Not a single spammer comment.Kung Wu say, man who read woman like book, prefer braille!

If you look through this thread it's not about the article, its about the label.
