Not a very accurate headline though, because to everyone outside of Shocker Nation, I think it is a shocker that WSU is contending for a Valley title this year.

Even most Shocker fans, if truly honest about it, would probably be surprised with our record if you told them before the season that 10 games in we would be down 3 starters including Carl "The Beast" Hall and that Carl would just return from reconstrucive surgery on his right thumb just in time for the ILS and CU games. Not too mention all the other sprained ankles, dislocated shoulders, back strains and spasms, and other assorted bumps and bruises the team has endured this year. Talk about a bunch of tough young men.

This season so far has simply been remarkable. Let's hope it not only continues but gets better as the Shocks return to health.

It looks very good in the USA Today, has a nice big picture of Cleanthony and Ehimen.

My thinking too, '72. I dont recall the Shox being picked 1 or 2 in many preseason polls.

No one ever really goes back and looks at who experts picked after the fact.

"When I got in here in 2007, it was a four-bid league," Marshall said. "Then for the next four years, we only get one team. What happened? I came to Wichita because I saw it as a quality basketball league where we wouldn't always have to win our conference tournament like we did at Winthrop. I thought we could have a good year, lose the tournament and get in. That hasn't been the case."

We've seen this quote or one much like it before, and to Marshall's credit he hasn't fussed about it or run off in pursuit of an opportunity someplace not "at this level." Instead, what he's in the process of doing -- and may already have done -- is making the stature of the Valley irrelevant. Winthrop had to win their conference tournament to get into the NCAA; these days Gonzaga and Butler generally don't, despite being (at least before Butler escaped to the A-10) in what are generally regarded as lesser conferences.

Marshall is putting WSU on that same plane even if the Valley does stay at its 2007-2010 level of prominence, making the Shocks good enough that year in and year out it's assumed they'll be an NCAA team unless something goes way wrong. And that's good news for all Shockers, because once that is accomplished, the lure of the "big boys" suddenly becomes a lot less tempting, as can be seen in the careers of Mark Few and Brad Stevens.

The print version of the USA TODAY in Topeka had the same story with a great picture of Cle and EO but it had a better headline. The headline here reads: "SHOCKING IT TO THEM Surpising Wichita State vaults to No. 21."
